Hey everybody, I never thought that I would be in the position to even consider turning down either of these fantastic programs, but I have been blessed with this wonderful predicament. I'm trying to decide between HPME at Northwestern or PLME at Brown, and I would love to hear anybody's (whether you're in either program or not) opinion on each of the programs. I know the approaches are very different toward what the program is meant to do with PLME stressing the liberal aspect of education much more. Any other thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance!

Congrats on both programs! I am in a similar situation as you with HPME and Princeton at hand. I was rejected from PLME. But anyways, I am stuck between a more appealing undergrad experience versus a guaranteed medical seat. I think PLME has the best of both worlds. Personally, I prefer Brown’s undergrad over NU’s undergrad waaaayyy more. I am personally not a big fan of NU undergrad. I also am a Chicago native and am kind of sick of the cold winters and unpredictable weather. I think NE will be slightly better. I personally think Brown is a bit more relaxed and more enjoyable. Also, if you do not like Alpert Medical School, I believe they let you apply out.

You can apply out at either place but Brown has strict rules about it where if you apply anywhere, you lose your seat and need to reapply for medical admission. Not sure if HPME has any similar rules.

If you are sure about medicine, Northwestern and if not pick any.

Feel free to PM me with questions about PLME.

Their approaches are similar; just because PLME has “Liberal” doesn’t mean it stresses “liberal aspect of education more”. In fact, with the freedom to take anything you want outsider of your major, it can be as broad or as narrowly focused as one wants. IMO, as far as the undergrad goes, the only meaningful difference is that HPME gives you the option to finish it in 3 years by reducing some of the requirements. If you choose to complete the undergrad portion in 3 years, you will save over $60K when compared to PLME.

The medical school program at Northwestern has higher rating by residency directors and higher overall ranking. It also has better residency matches for the most competitive specialties. Not sure how much that matters but Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been ranked as 9th in the country on the U.S. News.
