How is the political science department as NU... I am also looking at Wash U, and Georgetown (I'm in the College, but would transfer to SFS)...

One concern is that I am not SURE I want to do the whole polysci thing (if I were sure... Georgetown would probably seem the best answer)... also I am from the chicago suburbs and kinda want a change of pace? I am also concerned because my cousin majored in Political Science at Wash, got straight A's (I dunno her LSAT scores), and is getting rejected from a lot of top-notch law schools...

Input? Thanks

It's not about the major; WashU just seems to lag behind other peers in law school placement for some reason.

Did you visit Georgetown? If you like it there, I think that's your best choice unless there's a possibiliby that you may study science/engineering. It's a good place for international relation/foreign policy stuff and you seem to really want to get out of Chicago. Most people that I know who had lived in DC enjoyed it and it's a 4-hr train ride away from NYC. I doubt you would like St. Louis; it's in the midwest so it's not really that new to you culturally and is not a very exciting city; some people may say it's very vibrant but I came from Hong Kong and I am picky about what qualifies as "vibrant". ;) There's a reason why my friend could get a 5 bd-house in a nice neighborhood in St. Louis for under 400K whereas a two-bd condo in Lakeview can easily cost more than that. :)

Thanks for the input Sam Lee...

If leaving the Midwest were not such an important variable, would you still make the same recommendation? I was somewhat thinking Bio may be a possibility... and I just visited Wash U and Georgetown (NU tom.) and I liked both, but neither were like "WOW... I need to be here". I was a bit concerned with Georgetown's overall academics... campus not so pretty either... and it is true, they dont have as much money as others...

Do you know why Wash U is lame with law-school placement? How do the other (NU, Georgetown) do if you know?

Thanks a lot.

I didn't know you are interested in bio also. LOL! That's so differerent from poli sci.

I don't know why WashU doesn't fare as well as its peers in law schools placement. Actually I don't have conclusive evidence for that but I'd seen various lists of "undergrad institutions represented" by the student body of various top law schools and WashU's number is relatively low. GU and NU both have pretty good law placement. I'd seen the lists for NU and U Chic law schools last year and NU was the most represented (tied with UChicago for U Chic law school). I saw it on CC and I wish I can find the list now.

WashU is best for bio though. So I guess this is tough for you.

A reminder just in case, technically, poli sci isn't the same as international affairs/relation which GW is really strong in. But I probably wouldn't worry about it too much, seeing Bill Clinton went to Georgetown and had no problem to become a president. :)

Yah... Thats one of Georgetown's selling points... good ol' Bill.

Are you saying GW is better than Georgetown International Affairs wise? Is Georgetown still good I'd imagine? How about SFS... is it as "world renown" as many claim.

An intersting point, OT sorta, my cousing pointed out internship-wise, she could get some good internships in St. Louis, not having to compete with GW, Georgetown etc. in DC...

Ooops..that was a typo. I meant Georgetown, not GW. Bill Clinton got his degree from SFS.

Yes, I do believe it's pretty renowned.

As for internship? What kind of internship you are talking about? If you are talking about interning at the White House, I'd think Georgetown has a clear edge.

I'm a poli sci major here and I love the department so far. We have some really good professors. The Int'l Studies program was just revamped and it's looking good.
