NU Sophomore Taking Questions (contd.)

Celeste, the history department is very strong here at Northwestern. The political science program is very average, but if you're interested in Social Policy (which is a sociology-economics-political science major), that may interest you (That is my major.). It's a very popular major on campus. I don't know much about UofChicago, but I do know it's on the South Side (on the other side of town). It is viewed as the "place where fun dies." I've had a classmate who transferred from UofChicago to Northwestern. I didn't ask her reasons, but she likes it at NU. Yes, it's very easy to graduate from Northwestern with one major in 3 years (thank the quarter system). Many people add a minor, and the brave add a second major. (I'm working on it!) =)

Hey tenisghs,

This is probably something I could have eventually figured out but you're so helpful! I was just wondering, do they have a wireless network there at Northwestern?

http://www.it.northwestern.edu/oncampus/wireless/index.html

and there probably plenty of wifi networks made by students on their own

what is the social scene like at northwestern? do most people go into chicago each weekend or does evanston have enough going on? is there a big frat/sor. scene or is it more bars/clubs? is the school spirited, like are there fun things that the university organizes? also is the school pretty diverse in terms of the types of kids? like is is it a good mix of academic people and fun people?
- if you have a sec - 1400, 3.93 gpa, 4's and 5's on ap's (6 ap courses), low 700's on sat II's, good extracurriculars (sga, varsity cheer captain, drama club), would i get in? plus my cousin is a proffesor there and would right me a recommendation? what if i applied early decision? ThanKS!!

go48- Students are not allowed to make their own wi-fi networks. I checked into this, and it says that it could compromise the network's security so wireless routers/access points are strictly prohibited.

dont want to hijack this great thread so ill keep it short: if its for personal use dont see what the problem is (if you encrypt and use it only for urself and roomate). also, would be very hard for them to catch anybody, its very easy to hide it etc... but if its to rent acess to the whole floor i see their point...

Yeah, I realize that. You could use WEP protection, and I doubt anyone could ever get into the system. However, they don't seem to be accepting to any kind of wireless device whatsoever. I'm sure if you clone the MAC address then they could never find out (that's what I do here at my house). I don't want to start out on a bad note though! haha

Is there a monthly bandwith limit on internet usage?

thanks a lot for the info go48! i'll be going the safe way...

Krk3561, unfortunately Northwestern does have a maximum bandwidth limit on the Internet. If you're the type, like I am, who conscientously downloads music and videos, there are programs that students use to get around the restriction. I don't know exactly which programs (i know ITunes work and another program similar to Gnutella where you can share among students in your dorm/campus!) The internet is very fast here (Cable/T1). You just can't use any file-sharing program.

Readytoleave, to just give you a brief response, there are wireless stations and lounges across campus. It's important to have wireless on your computer.

Thanks a lot tenisghs, I just got a new laptop w/ wireless so I should be good

Tenisghs - My daughter and I are coming to visit NU in mid-May. All the online hotels are expensive and you can't tell how close to campus they might be. Can you recommend some OK, modestly-priced hotels close in to campus?

Hi
I am thinking about northwestern, so I have a few questions:
1. It is easy to get involved with music when not a music major?
2. How easy is it to take electives?
3. How would you describe the typical student? I myself am from a very diverse school where everyone has a group but is totally friendly towards everyone. Is it like that or more cliqueish at NU? and does everyone really wear brand names?
4. I am glad you can avoid parties since i'm not the partying type really. I am actually hoping to take in some of the cultural stuff of Chicago if I go there, but are you too busy to do this? Also, is it easy to get involved with school activities?
5. What's the biggest difference for you between college and high school?
Thanks for this, your post is really helpful!

GaDad, try Best Western in Evanston. If you have AARP, AAA, Best Western Membership Card, etc...it should help to bring the price down. I know we have the Hotel Orriington but I'm not sure about the price.

You can walk from both the Best Western and the Hilton Garden...both should be resonable in May...

I stayed at the Best Western, it's a pretty nice place. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the Norris University Center. But it IS Chicago (basically), so pretty much everything is going to be expensive since it is a big city.

how far is the hotel orrington from campus? walking distance?

Go48, the Hotel Orrington is right on campus. it's the closest hotel to Northwestern. (In fact, it borders South Campus). They have just renovated the hotel so I don't know much about it. It looks exquisite so I'm not sure how much they cost.

Thanks for the info everyone!
