NU Sophomore Taking Questions (contd.)

Priceline.com is an option where you select the neighborhood and hotel star rating. Bid what you are comfortable with and the chances are you will get a good deal.

I would just go on the Evanston and North Shore Visitors Bureau website for hotel options. Look on the link on the previous page that I gave someone on travel information in Evanston.

does nu have any classes that are pass/fail and dont affect ur gpa?
how much does rushing the first semester of college affect ur grades
should i wait to rush till lateryears?

I'm pretty sure I heard that you are not allowed to rush the first quarter.

And you can take some classes P/F, but all of your core classes for your major have to be letter grades.

As UC_benz tried to say, you can take classes P/N only if they are electives. If they are major, minor and distribution requirements, you cannot take them P/N.

Few more questions here:

Should I bring a printer?
Does the university have a good shuttle system (frequency, fare etc.)?
Do they have good open gym hours?
Which freshman seminar do you like the most?

Thanks!

While someone mentions the freshman seminar... can you explain what it is, exactly?

Yes, bring your own printer unless you don't mind paying money to print out sheets. The university has multiple shuttle routes so yes it is a good system. You do not need a fare. Just present your student ID (WildCARD). The gym hours are good, but the largest gym (SPAC) has the best hours IMO on North Campus.

Eh, I can't really comment on freshman seminars since they are all so different. I guess my favorite freshman seminar was Contemporary Art Criticism since I have an appreciation for fine arts and art history. Choose what sounds the most interesting to you.

Here is more information about Freshman Seminars:

bump bump bump bump bump it up.

I'll be going into WCAS next year too. I am currently undecided about my major, I have thought about so many different things to study. I love math and I have had thoughts about law, but otherwise I have not really been exposed to too many areas of study (just math, sciences, English, which I enjoy but are fairly broad). Anyways, I guess all I am asking is if you have any tips for an entering freshman who is undecided (sorry if you have already answered a question like this). Thanks!

Sawd87, take it easy and just focus on the distribution requirements. If you have college credit, that is an additional advantage. Take your freshman seminars, a few distros and one course that you find very intriguing. I also recommend a course or two in other schools. You have the entire two years (although I believe you should by the end of fall quarter of your second year at NU) to declare your major.

Awesome, thanks so much!

Hey! Silly question but...what do most people use to carry around their books? Also, if I am schedualed for a class that ends at 4:00 and another that starts at 4:00 on the same day...will I have trouble? Or does it really end at 3:50 or something? Thanks!:)

backpacks or shoulder bags or hands

Ilabcurious1423, classes have 10-minute break periods. That way, students can get from one section of campus to another section.

As for backpacks, it doesn't matter. Girls here though tend to wear stylist shoulder bags. I have a backpack and a shoulder bag.

I was wondering what the process is for rush as a freshman girl. I am from Washington state, as you can see by my user name--can't wait to get the hell out of here. At the University of Washington, rush is done a couple weeks before school starts and you live in the sororities/fraternities your freshman year. At NU, do you live in the greek houses your freshman year? When do you rush? My main question is--- should I send in a housing deposit if I plan on rushing? Thank you! PS- My name is Kate Robinson.

yes, you should. freshman are not allowed to rush until winter quarter, so you will be living in the dorms at the start of the year no matter what.

Thank you very much!

Another question .. is Northwestern worth debt, if I have a full ride to my state school - the University of Washington?
