My student/family needs to make a decision. Instate tuition at UT, full pay at Northwestern or merit aid at George Washington Univ? Journalism major at all schools. Interested in political/strategic communication. We just keep going around in circles.
The NU tuition is doable, can’t help wondering if it is the “right” thing to do.
Has he been to GWU? It is much different than a traditional college campus. For example, they have no dining halls. I think most of the advantage of GWU comes outside the classroom A motivated student can really take advantage of intra semester internships.
To state the obvious: If COA was equal, then Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism would be the easy pick.
FWIW Columbia University is outstanding for masters degree in journalism.

This sounds like a situation where my current soph might wind up.
She wants OUT of Texas, but if she stays course, she’ll most likely be auto admit to UT (she’s currently thinking about journalism). Besides the auto admit potential, she’ll also have a ton of credits via AP and UT OnRamps and local Dual credits.
So, “on paper” it seems like a no brainer - minus the wanting to g t f o of here (can’t blame her).
We’d have to have a ton of aid for the others I think. And NPCs don’t really work too well since we’re self employed so the line item looked at is in NO WAY what we net.
To her UT will feel like HS 2.0 with other Texans (even though Austin is pretty like minded).

I don’t know of any HS with a 40K student population.
well. obviously. that’s also another negative.
The point is that college, even at a huge public, even filled mostly with in-state kids*, will be very different from HS (it’s like comparing living in a small city to living In a small isolated town). A small LAC may be closer to a HS feel.
*And, TX, as you know, is a large and varied state. Cornell draws half its student body from the mid-Atlantic; 60% from the Northeast, yet I never hear people describe Cornell as HS part 2.
I grew up on LI. Went to school in PA. Sister in Boston. While the region is smaller than Texas, the areas are far more diverse. UT has a big “we’re Texan” vibe as most places here do no matter where in the state you go. She would be happy in NYC but NYU is most likely off the table. She wouldn’t necessarily see any HS people she knows at UT bc it’s so big. But the people would definitely be the same.
She went with NU. Hope it is worth the $!
