WUSTL, like Rice is in a beautiful part of town. It is located in the Forest Park area of town so to imply that it’s in a bad neighborhood shows your ignorance. Both schools are great, with Rice’s reputation to favor science/math types and it’s a little smaller. It also helps WashU to offer full merit scholarship opportunities outside of engineering.

krug - STL as a city is unsafe. Look at the stats. If the bubble of Wash U and area is nice, great - but the city sucks.

hahaha

Antarius - all major cities have “unsafe” neighborhood, as you well know. If you dislike STL and WashU, that’s fine too. I just want to clarify that the university is separated from the unsavory part of town by all of midtown. Like Rice, it’s closer to the airport than downtown.

which airport?

Rice - 14 miles from Hobby, 26 from IAH. WUSTL - 6 miles from airport (with great free for students mass transit system)

Rice is 2.5 miles from downtown though.

^^ Y’all are too funny on the Rice v. Wash U pros and cons. I have a son at both schools and they’re both terrific in many of the same ways and some unique ways. With that said, Rice should be aware that Wash U is pulling a dirty trick to get ahead with its yield – they are outfitting the dorms with brand new Tempurpedic mattresses! You heard me right. I think Rice should counter with the same tactic. What do you think?

Tempurpedic mattresses??! O.O

Well WashU just moved up on my list…

Sorry to sound stupid but why does a school get more money if it has more apps? From the app fee? What about the cost of processing, reviewing and evaluating all the extra apps? Am I missing something?

Seriously? Wow.

I LIVE in StL and I can say that I’ve only felt unsafe maybe once in my entire life… and that was when I was about thirty steps outside a ghetto. Ghettos are in every city, you know.

StL’s rep as a dangerous city is completely unfounded. I took a WUSTL campus tour and on it someone (who was incidentally from Houston) complained about WUSTL being the “murder capital of the world.” I wanted to turn to them and call them out. If they are going to believe that then they might as well not bother applying. I would gladly take their spot.

That said, I am also looking at Rice. Both are great universities that offer excellent opportunities. They are both hidden gems, and should be appreciated for their value. This petty bickering about which college is higher-ranked and why is really uncalled for.

WUSTL and Rice are eerily similar schools, they look similar, they are similarly located in major cities, and they have very positive atmospheres, but for some reason people on CC tend to hate WUSTL with a passion. Some of the few differences I saw between the schools:

1) WUSTL has worse weather
2) Rice seems to have much more regional focus than WUSTL. What, are 50% from Texas?
3) WUSTL seems much more upper-class, and a more collegiate aesthetic (comparing dorms)
4) At Rice, people say y’all

Rice is excellent, but I must say that WUSTL is much more in line with prestigious universities in the northeast. At least in my mind, both schools are ranked very reasonably.

“1) WUSTL has worse weather”

This is a very subjective statement. I personally love getting the extremes of both seasons (although I would rather the extremes be a little less… extreme).

Others may love Rice’s weather more, though, and that’s okay. Weather cannot be a criteria for how good a school is because it is completely based on opinion.

Rice has the best quality of life. What is a better collegiate aesthetic (comparing dorms)?

And FallenAngel - STL has the highest crime rate in the country. Thats why people think it is unsafe

Antarius - You answer a lot of posts on this board which is great , but you have lost some credibility with me with the Wash U and St. Louis bashing. It’s pretty obvious you have never visited.

helpingmom - this is an opinion. That is it. I stated that in my mind, washU was the only school ranked better than rice that I did not feel deserved to be there.

Their mass mailings amongst other things are legal and acceptable, yes. I just dont like it.

I would hardly call this bashing.

In any case… Houston has a population that is 8 times that of Stl but has a violent crime count of half that of stl.

St. Louis is the most dangerous city in the country. Regardless of area.

Just stating facts. I am not making anything up or making wild unfounded claims

Rethinking this:

In any case - you are right - there is no merit in the argument. I got a little carried away. The ranking are what they are, and the crime stats are the same. Didnt mean to antagonize anyone, just was making a personal statement known. Cheers

^^^^maybe I should have said “more erratic” instead of worse. I find it very strange how it transitions from rainy to sunny to cloudy to humid, all in the course of one day.

yesterday we got whacked by a crazy storm that uprooted trees and knocked out power. Today it is clear and 95 degrees.

:O

*as my experience proves wrong, I hang my head in shame
