Number of As in intro chem

So about how many or what percent of students taking intro chem get an A (anything 90 or better). Im wondering since as an incoming premed this would be pretty important

calm down.

enjoy your summer.

and it depends based on the teacher. Look at the median grade reports – you should be able to do the calculations from there…

well the median grade is a B. So half get above that. Im wondering how many get A. Im guessing 15-20%? I dont really think anyone could calculate that from the median grade report.

Just a note, anything 90 or better does not necessarily correspond to an A. Keep in mind that classes are curved.

Well the average is a B. So 50% get a B or higher. I think that most of the intro science classes are curved by the bell curve, so assuming that… I’d estimate around 10% - 15% get A’s or higher.

I took 2070 & 2080, and I think that the class was curved so that a little less than 25% earned some sort of A. The class was not on a strict bell curve, but was instead fitted to some other type of specific distribution.

Average is usually a B-. Prof posted the distribution at the beginning of the semester and I’m almost certain it’s less than 20% who get some sort of A. I think it was like 15-18% or so.

If I may quote Prof. Zax from an e-mail that he sent to students after the chem 2070 final:

“Final grades were assigned so that this year’s grades look consistent with last year’s, and the year’s before, and so on. If you scored in the precise middle of the distribution, you should have received a B- grade for the course; something less than a quarter of the course should have received some kind of A, almost two-thirds an A or a B, and the rest a C and below.”

That was for Fall 2009. They could always change the grade distribution, and I’m pretty sure that the distribution was the same for 2080.

I believe average is B-, median is a B-/B. 1 SD roughly = A-

If you want a A get at least 1.3 SD above on every test. I normally count my test grades as 1.5 SD = A,

@jerseyindian – yes you can, as this thread would suggest.

But please, enjoy your summer. You’ll have enough time to worry about this at Cornell…why start now?
