Can you really only chose 20 colleges to apply for on the Common Application? Once you submit a complete essay are you able to add more?

Yes, 20 is the max you can apply to under one account, and you can submit different versions of your essay to different schools by creating an alternate version of your common app.

Do you really want to apply to more than 20? My D applied to 13 colleges and it took up most of her free time during the fall semester. In addition to the basic common application most colleges have supplements with additional essays. Plus there's ordering transcripts, SAT scores, recommendations, etc. Our average cost to apply per school was about $75 for the application fee, SAT fee, transcript fee and postage.

dsultemeier, I totally agree that 20+ is a lot. The problem is that I didn't realize that there was a limit for applications so I submitted supplements of schools that I am not sure I would have if I had known that I would not be able to apply to to others.
erebus, is it illegal to create a new account? Has anyone ever done this? It seems like there would be something wrong with doing it, but does anyone have any advice?

If you absolutely have to apply to more than 20, I guess you can send them via mail. I don't think they would allow you to create a separate account. The limit only pertains to the number of applications sent online. But again, I think even over 10 is too many, you should do more research and cut down your list. Cheers.
