I have a 2060 SAT score (740 Math, 650 Reading, 670 Writing) and a 4.12 GPA (5-point scale, weighted). My grades have improved every year and I have a reason I can state in my essay why my grades were low (learning disability/family problems)

Now I was wondering, is this too many colleges? The cost of applying is not an issue, and I have a vip application to tulane, fordham, and vermont. I'm having trouble narrowing my list down. I do not have any feeling toward buffalo, albany, and stony brook, but my dad told me to apply to them a while back, and they have already been paid for. Is this going to be a problem for my teacher recommendations? Should I make the list shorter?

16 seems obscene. i would limit it to like 12, because really, you should be able to narrow down the number of schools you want to go to to that, and then you won't eat up others' valuable spots if you are accepted at many places.

You think I should just not bother with the 3 sunys i mentioned? That will bring it down to 15. I could take tulane, vermont, and fordham out too. I don't care too much for them, but I didnt see any harm in applying since they were free and didnt require a new essay + they are good schools.

GZA- they may be free, but don't forget you still have to pay to send standardized tests to them (regarding tulane, vermont, and fordham). If you're not interested in them, just nix them off your list.

Just get rid of any school that you're not interested in. I'd suggest 12 schools max (or even 10 max).

SUNY Binghamton Choose one SUNY (maybe too late)
Boston Coll
U of Delaware - why? What's the draw?
Fordham Univ - don't bother; you'll waste their time and yours if you are not interested. Besides, you already have BC; choose one.
UMD College Park - you already have Delaware... choose one from DELMARVA
U of Michigan - Yes, go big blue
New York Univ - polar opposite of michigan? Decide! Do you want manhattan or scenic Ann Arbor? They are not the same animal. NYU doesn't even KNOW football.
Northeastern Univ - you already have BC, so why this one too?
Pennsylvania State Univ - everybody knows PennState. Can't do this one AND Michigan, unless you also put on Ohio State and Indiana (CHOOSE ONE FLAGSHIP U.)
Rutgers New Brunswick - why?
SUNY Albany
SUNY Stony Brook
Syracuse Univ - Nice school - why? What's the draw? Snow?
Tulane Univ - Your only southern school? It's free to apply? NO!
SUNY Buffalo
U of Vermont - You have BC already.
U of Wisconsin Madison - NOT in the same decade as MICH.

There, now you are down to:
One SUNY
One Flagship U (Mich or PSU preferred by this writer)
BC
Either Delaware of Maryland
and NYU if you must.

I'll let you choose one more, just to make you happy. How about a nice LAC?

I took your advice Johnson. The list is now at 14. You think this is a reasonable amount?

fencersmother, I have interest in all the schools im applying to (except albany, buffalo, and stony brook, but those are all paid for already). Cost is not an issue.

"Interest" is not enough reason. Do you have a desire to go there?

For instance: you have a bunch of Flagship U's, some of which are similar in size. PSU and Maryland are even relatively close to each other. What is the reason for so many big schools?

I'm just suggesting think about what you want of college. Here is a test we have used for years in our family which makes the college choice and the choice of majors a bit easier: imagine yourself 3 years from now in college. Are you in Manhattan, taking a bus to class? Are you running across a huge campus (maybe even one which requires you to catch a bus or shuttle to get to your next class on time?)? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? If a man, are you wearing a shirt and tie to work? Wearing a ranger outfit? Studying medicine? Imagine your future and make it yours.

In my class, the max number of schools is 14 (min being 1 for those dead-set on the state school...). Personally, I'd want to kill someone by the end of everything if I applied to 14 schools. Mind you, I'm applying to 9 schools, but I still hold that it should be 12-14 schools (especially since so few of your schools are common app schools).
14 will be a lot of work... I completely agree with fencersmother.

I will have to decide if I get into bot, but if I get into PSU, but not Maryland or vice versa that's a different story. That's why I'm applying to both.
