Number of Courses

I was just wondering what the average number of courses is for students at BU. People have been telling me that 4 is a good number to start off with, but a lot of my friends have signed up for 5 or 6 courses, admittedly at different colleges.

Is 4 what most people at BU take, or should I be taking more? I’m hoping to be considered for scholarships for sophomore year and don’t want to look like I’ve slacked off. Conversely I don’t want to get in way over my head. Thanks!

Four is normal. You can't sign up for 5 first semester freshman year anyways, the school doesn't want you to get too in over your head

You can take a class like Ballroom Dancing or similar in addition to the four academic courses.

Yep, 4 is the normal number of classes to take. As a freshman you can only take 18 credits and classes are (generally) 4 credits.

thanks everyone for the help, I feel a lot more at ease about it now.

Ballroom dancing!!! YES!!!

Four classes is plenty especially if they have discussions attached..ehem.. and labs..and pre labs...but yeah. 18 is the set number of credits that your tuition covers and you need departmental approval to take on anymore. I took 18 cr. my first two semesters freshman year and while it wasn't too bad it was still pretty time consuming considering most freshman schedules. I would recommend just four- four cr. classes but if you're up to it 18 cr. semesters and a few summers and you're graduating early : )
