Number of ED applications at Hopkins

Any ideas on the number of ED applications that Hopkins received this year? My guess is it is up, probably by 15 to 30%. I noticed the change in recruiting strategy by the admission office.

Can you elaborate? What strategies did they use?

I really hope the number stays the same or drops… I’m pretty sure Hopkins admits only 500 ED applicants each year and if the pool increases by even 15%, the admit rate drops to 37-38%. Can anyone else clarify for us?

For one thing, they don’t deny ED has an advantage any more. Some schools including Duke were telling the applicants that last year and the result was dramatic increase in ED applicants. Also I think that the new president is trying to make JHU admission more competitive in comparison to other top schools such as Duke, Chicago, UPenn and Cornell. With JHU’s academic reputation, there is no reason why its admission and yield rates won’t be comparable to the aforementioned schools.

Ah!! Don’t make JHU admissions more competitive! Do you think the ED admission rate would still be around 40% by 2012?

By 2012, I’d say 30-35%.

I am a current Hopkins student and this article was just in the JHU Newsletter. Apparently, there were 1,300 applications this year for ED, which was a 13% rise over last year’s 1,115. Also, they predict a 10% rise in RD applicants which they expect will lead to a 17% overall acceptance rate, down from last year’s record low of 20%.

This is bad… Assuming JHU accepts 500 ED applicants, the admit rate would only be at 38%, which is about the same as Cornell’s ED admit rate. Then again, the newsletter said that the increase was 13% from 1115, which is 1260 instead of 1300, making the admit rate 39.7%, but the extra 1.7% is neglible. By 2012, I predict JHU will skyrocket into the top 10 in USNWR, with ED admit rates of about 30% and RD admit rates of about 14-15%.

Jesus Christ, JHU’s getting popular nowadays.

Are other schools not undergoing similar changes?

The main one that I have heard whose applicant pool has dramatically risen is Penn

I’m not sure, but JHU’s been changing drastically over the past 2 years, more so than other schools. But, if what you said is true, then it’s a scary thought because in a decade or so, college admissions are gonna get so competitive that an awesome SAT score/great ECs/stellar grades won’t amount to anything with top 20 schools.

Is that a coincidence that President Ron Daniel has been at JHU for almost two years? I don’t think so. I have the sense that he is behind this thing.

Prof, that’s interesting! So with this new president, is JHU using new marketing strategies to increase the applicant pool? Do you have any insight as to what kinds of strategies they’re using?

I think Hopkins has not been one to toot it’s own horn despite what an amazing place it is. This is the opposite of most places who toot their own horns about nothing…

^ Agreed. Before my college search process, I didn’t even consider Hopkins and before high school, the only way I heard about Hopkins was through my friend being accepted there himself. After much research on the university, I now know how great a place it is.

Anyways, I think this discussion should be put on hold as we already know the number of ED applicants (1300, or so they say).

1,314 to be exact.

Link borrowed from another thread.

Wow - 1,314 is a very large increase and I think it’s larger than most predicted. Good luck to those ED’ers.

Does Hopkins ONLY pick 500 early applicants?

I’m pretty sure they do, because in 2008 they admitted 500 out of 995, and in 2009 they admitted less than 500 out of about 1115 applicants, so I’m guessing they’d do the same this year. It sucks because of the increased competition and it’s getting me all worried. Anyways, if you’re an above average applicant, I’m sure you’ll stand a chance in the ED round. Worst case scenario, you get deferred to the RD round and have to endure ANOTHER 4 months of the stressful wait.

Thanks for the reply… if you have time… can you please chance me?

Just saw that other schools have posted similar increases…
