Does the 39% refer to those who actually failed the PRT, or those who did not pass? I'm not trying to split hairs here. I'm just wondering if the 39% includes the walking/hobbling "broken" Plebes who may have no score because they could not perform the evolution. I'm hoping they ARE included, because otherwise, the class performance would be even worse.

And I'm curious what the end-of-Plebe-Summer PRT showed?

Perhaps, those parents who have experienced neither Plebe Summer nor Plebe Lite are living slightly more vicariously than appropriate through their upper class midshipmen. Maybe we should forgive them their exuberant ignorance.

This is starting to look like the AFA forum.

USNA69: Very good point. But my real question is, who cares about the stats and who had the tougher plebe year (my class of course)? I know that the classes of 2009-2012 do not care about the stats. Reform is on Sunday. Academics start on Wednesday. Football starts one week later on 8/30. The summer is over. Bottom line.

Admissions just reported 39%- did not specify if the wounded plebes were included in that count- I would suspect not, but having not asked that question cannot state for sure. The briefs did mention that there would be more of an emphasis on running for the second half of the summer, which I assume was done. It is my understanding the PRT will be repeated by company following reform. Some athletic teams will take it seperately.

Two questions --- of those who were in Tango Company during the summer do you know if any went back to their summer companies and stayed --- also do midshipmen considering seperation go to Tango during the acedemic year. I know that they are interviewed by everyone from their squad leader to the Dept Dant during the process but I can't recall if they stay put in their company or move.

Tango is for summer only-
those that entered have already been seperated and the company should be closed by monday.

I do not have any information as to how many from tango were retained this summer. What I can say is that the kids are given lots of opportunity to talk and think things over, and if they do decide to stay the course, they usually are placed in a new company. The academy does everything possible to make the kids consider the ramifications of their choice, especially so early in the process, but there is no force to retain or dismiss- that decision comes down to the kid- unless they are being seperated for other reasons.

Seperations following the start of the academic year are handled through the COC if for disciplinary reasons or at the Mids request, or through the Academic Board if for academic reasons. Both are handled on a case-by-case basis, and the Mid is retained in their company until the process is completed.

First of all, our (2012) plebe summer has not been shorter, its 6 weeks long, just like other classes. And as far as it being easy or Plebe Lite or whatever, I'd say that only detailers should be commenting on that...not other upperclassmen, and not parents. In my opinion (and this being from the comments of detailers) it is just as tough...or maybe that is just because of the nature of my company (plebe summer platoon) which DEFINITELY has a reputation.....anyway, I'm glad Plebe Summer is over and I can't wait until HELLo Night....

What is a good score on the PRT, my plebe reported a score of 89. I have no idea where that is or what that means in the big scope of things.

An 89 would be a percentage, so 89% or B+

I correct myself in saying that our Plebe Summer was the same as last year's. Ours was 47 days and last year's was 54. My apologies.

jpr_fire2gold - congratulations on making it through Plebe Summer! Now the hard part starts -- getting to graduation!

I'd be interested in hearing about your overall experience ---

Again, congratulations!

When is HELLo night?

Tonight (Monday) is hello night for most companies. The method of going about it varies from company to company. Some go crazy with elaborate plans to scare the plebes, others just let the plebes settle in and meet the upperclass and it's more laid back.

I also heard that the 39% was the PASS rate of the initial strength test, meaning that 61% had failed. I have full faith in the overall physical ability of 2012 because they have all been through the rigors of plebe summer, which puts everyone into their best shape of their lives. Historically, the plebes always have the best PRT scores on the first semester PRT.

89 on the PRT is a decent score as explained before, it's a B+.

GoNavyXC makes a very relevant point...

Most of these evolutions will vary from company to company .... squad leader to squad leader. On any given day it may seem 'lite', and then (just when you MIGHT be getting comfy!), there's a lil reality check, and our sons/daughters are reminded that they are still learning ...

My son said simply that as much as the 'grind' wears on him...he knows you gotta earn 'upperclass' ..... so .... you drag your keister outta the rack each morning and get to work!

and....
eventually ...
you'll wake up and it will be May (God willing!)....

And I sit here and silently pray that Hello Night will NOT be too bad....
'cause I'm a mom, and tha's how I 'roll' :)

Good luck to all w/AC year!!

BEAT ARMY!! (again) ;)

actually, it will be ranked at a "B". There are no "plus" and "minus" grades at the academy- just straightforwarded A, B, C, D and F's. And from what I have seen (granted, limited as it is) grades are rounded "down," not "up."

So are the grade cutoffs 90 or above for A, 80 up to 90 for a B, etc.?

^^^ that is my understanding.

I think everyone is mistaking the letter grade with the PRT.

The only letter grade assigned is the Physical Education (PE) grade. The PE grade is normally 1/3 of the PRT and 2/3 of the semester PE course. The exception is during plebe year, when boxing, wrestling, and the PRT are all 1/3, respectively. The PE grade is a "whole" letter grade and does not include +/-.

For example:

During 3/C swimming, MIDN X earns a 95 for the course. MIDN X also earns an 80.0 on the PRT. MIDN X will receive an "A" (90%) for PE.

MIDN Y earns an 80 for swimming but max'd the PRT (99.9). MIDN Y will receive a "B" (86%) for PE.

The PRT grade is numerical to the nearest decimal point and is factored into the Military Order of Merit (MOM) and Overall Order of Merit (OOM).

Bottom line, work out -- the reason the PRT is weighted less is because it is an assesment of physical activity on one day (even though you are suppose to be working out daily), where the PE course normally has multiple grades that comprise the class (a "bad day" wouldn't kill someone). For someone who might have had a "bad day" on the PRT, this formula benefits them.

Summary: PE grade = PRT (numerical, to one decimal point) + PE course(s) (numerical, to one decimal point).

Pep does NOT make everyone in the best shape of their lives, only those that came in out of shape.
