I'm just wondering. How many schools are you all applying to?
Is it ideal to apply to an equal number of reach, match and safety schools?

5(low I know): Wisconsin(accepted already), Michigan(accepted already), South carolina(accepted already), UGA(waiting til December 15, EA notification, it's a match), and GWU(match/reach, ED school because I love it so much).

If don't make the cut for GW, will apply to Hopkins.

How have you already been accepted at those schools? Isn't early decision/action notification in like December?

Not rolling admissions. That takes less than a month. Yay for being impatient and picking out random schools with rolling admissions so I can quell my fears of not going to college.

I am applying to six schools. Two reach, two match, two safety.

I'm applying to 3. One reach (not a super reach), a very reasonable match, and a safety.

two reaches, 3 matches, and a safety.

one reach, one very reasonable reach, and a safety

4 Reach/2 Match/2 Safety.

The most I have ever seen on this fourm was an international student who applied to 43 schools, just to see what the best financial aid package he could get was.

doesnt sound like he would have qualified for much.

im applying to 4 reaches, 1 reach/match, 2 match, 1 match/safety, 1 safety

7 schools - the categories melt into each other, but generally reaches, fits and safeties.

4 Reaches, 3 Reach-Matches, 2 Matches, 4 Safeties

Wow! Gluttons for punishment! :) At my s's school (private) if you apply to more than 6, they put the extra paperwork at the bottom of their priority list for schools # 7+. There was talk of charging a fee of some sort for any more than 6 (hassle factor, I guess). And btw-- the senior class always, ALWAYS has 100% acceptance to college. So relax folks, you really don't need to make yourselves crazy. They are encouraged to apply to 2-3 reaches, 2-3 matches, 1-2 safety (or some combination thereof.) Try to enjoy your sr yr a bit... it flies by.

Back when I was applying last year, I applied to 12 schools. One of my friends applied to 19 (she got into 11 of them). I understand the arguments against applying to a bunch of schools, but with the admissions process the way it is, I think it is unfair to force applicants applying to the top schools where admissions is a crapshoot to curb the amount of their applications and hinder potential acceptances.

Xanatos-
I have to strongly disagree. It is exactly because of people like you and your friend that people feel compelled to apply to an outrageous # of schools. Your friend can't attend 11 schools, and all he/she is doing is holding a spot that should have been offered to someone else. I am sure you are very proud of the # of schools you were accepted to, but what if it was you who was wait-listed or rejected because of someone else's excesses?? The students at my s's school were accepted into all the ivies and most of the top competitive schools. Not every student is a NMS (7% of the students were), but all the students, regardless of their scholastic or athletic strengths, applied to and were accepted by appropriate schools for them. It doesn't make sense to apply to a school that you really don't want to attend, and I am sorry- you just can't have trouble narrowing the pool down from 12 or 19. Your year and wallet must have been a bit strained. when you are applying to that # of schools, you are out of the realm of what can be justified as reasonable. You are either doing it for bragging rights, or you are applying to so many reach schools that statistically, you may just luck out and get into one of them. And BTW, my s. didn't like Dartmouth, to my surprise. Too much recent turnover in the Physics Dept, and who wants foreign lgge classes at the crack of dawn? If you are careful and reasonable in your search and selection, you can be accepted by schools you want to attend. Sorry, but the other approach is just selfish. Just my $.02

we're only allowed to apply to 7 schools at my hs, but i think im doing 3 reach 2 match 2 safeties.

Well I have applied to 27 school so far, and I'm still not done. I have gotten into 9 as of now. I am not doing this for bragging rights etc. I am simply keeping doors open for the future. I am not sure what school I want to attend or in what area of the country I want to be in. That is why I am applying to a wide array of schools in various locations. I do not think that people like Xantos are "taking spots" or being selfish. If so, there would be a law limiting the number of colleges one could apply to.

9... 3 reasonable reaches, 3 matches, 3 safeties

3.97: just out of curiosity, what are the 27 schools you are applying to?
