I know the website says a max of 2-3. But on top of the 2 from teachers, would admissions people be annoyed at having to read 4-5 reference letters?

Yes! Not recommended.

Absolutely! Depending upon the recommendations, even 1 can push it. Every recommendation beyond the required two MUST actually add to the application in a way that is not covered by any other piece of material.

The admissions expression to keep in mind is “The thicker the folder the thicker the applicant”.

If you have a particular reason for sending recommendations in addition to the usual required ones, then call admissions and ask them how many it is okay to send. For instance, if you are a musician and have a teacher who would write, did major research with a science mentor, that kind of thing.

Our daughter is a musician and had two music teachers send letters (they did not teach the same thing). I believe that these letters made the difference for her acceptance.

But we called admissions both about the extra letters, and about sending a CD, and we kept things considerate for the admissions folks. Four or five references would be a very bad idea I think.

i did research with my science mentor but i mentioned it inside an essay should i still send a supplement recommendation?

Don’t be that kid who sends in 5 recommendations. If two people can’t say plenty of great things about you, why would five?

azndarkvader - It depends upon what specifically the mentor would have to say about you that is different from your two teacher and GC recommendations. If it would only repeat “your strengths” then do not do. If there were something clearly different, then add the 1 recommendation, but limit it to that.

The whole purpose of supplemental recs is to give them something new and not contained in your other LORs. Replication is just a waste of time. From H’s website:

Should students send supplementary recommendations?
While we can make careful evaluations with required recommendations, we are happy to read helpful letters from people directly familiar with applicants’ lives outside the classroom. Such letters are not necessary, however, and it is generally advisable to submit no more than two or three.

i was just planning on submitting 1
