number of units per quarter

How many units can you take per quarter? What is the average/max/acceptable amount for a normal person? Is it suicide to take ochem and BILD classes in the same quarter? HELP and thank you

22 units. any more than that any you will have to petition your college, not unheard of.

People usually take 16/quarter but you can take 12 if you are ahead on your 4 year plan

It’s not suicide. And that’s cool that you’re from Davis. I’m from Lincoln. :)

In my dorm and group of friends, at least, the average seems to be about 16 units/quarter. I do know some people that take 12, but that’s mostly because they are ahead on their 4-year plan, dropped a class they were doing badly in, or are taking harder classes (like ochem). For my first year at UCSD, I averaged 19 units/quarter and I kind of wish I took more. For me personally, four classes (one six units and one five) left me with too much time on my hands even with clubs, hanging out with friends, and volunteering. I’m just the type of person that needs to stay busy in order to do well.

I do have friends taking the ochem honors series with upper division bio classes and it’s really not that big of a deal. Quoting my friend, who’s a biochem/chem major: “Just stay on top of things. I think ochem only makes you suicidal if you don’t pay the class adequate attention to learn the material. Personally the difficulty of ochem is overexaggerated.”

^I completely agree with all of that. I’m taking 21 units this quarter (one of those classes being ochem) and everything is completely doable with still having a social life. The point is you have to actually hunker down and get studying done sometimes.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I’m feeling a lot more confident now… awesome! I really needed to hear I wouldn’t be six feet under six weeks into ochem and bio lol.

It’s awesome you’re from Lincoln! I can’t wait to meet people at UCSD who are from my area (who are actually cool, like you lol). I just had to get out of Davis even though my mom wants me to stay. Heck no, it’s boring haha.
I still haven’t been to San Diego, but something about it just speaks to me… and I know I’m going there next year!

I want to hear all about San Diego!

i feel having a packed schedule is better too.
fall quarter i had a typical schedule, didnt do so well.
winter, one of my classes required a lot of reading from the text. i did much better. it’s weird, because winter was more difficult, yet i did the best.

having less time to laze around is truly the best.
enough time to sleep, eat, and an occasional/1 hour (or more) daily “your time” is really all that’s necessary to have, aside from class/studying.

even though youve kind of gotten your answer already…
haha…

I’m from Sacramento. SD has the beach, superior weather, AND I didn’t have to take any allergy medications for five years. It’s a little farther away from [good] snow, but whatever, you’ll deal.
