Numerical Grades on Transcript

Do colleges recalculate the GPA for students that have numerical grades on their transcript?

For example would an overall GPA of 98.2 UW (with 2 92s, which on most scales is an A-) be viewed as a 98.2 (4.0) or 3.98?

If so, would my GPA (98.2 or 3.98) be viewed as lower than someone with a 97 UW (4.0 GPA) who did not have a grade below a 93.

Sorry for the string of questions, but this has just been nagging at the bag of my mind!

Thanks in advance!

I’m not sure there is a “most scales”. In all the schools my children have attended (in multiple states) a 92 is a B.
And it all depends on the college. No way to specifically answer

Your guidance counselor should have a very good idea of how colleges view numerical GPAs from your HS. Plus many colleges recalculate GPA based on their own criteria (ex. academic subjects only etc.). It is not something I’d spend time on personally.

The colleges will recalculate your GPA.

I am not saying it isn’t done some places, but my son asked that question at several “top school” admissions sessions (because our high school, and the majority of public schools in New York grade numerically) and all stated that they do not recalculate. They said they view a student’s transcript in the context of their own school, not in comparison to other schools. Penn AO thought it was an absurd question-she said there was no way they would have the time or inclination to take on such a task and there would be no reasonable and equitable way to do so.

@planner03 yea thats a good point about New York high schools. What were some of the other “top schools” that suggested they do not recalculate?
