Since Pre-Med is not a major, will Nursing be a good major with Pre-Med program. I heard that nurses have a harder time getting into medical school. Is that true?

Nurses are not doctors and nursing is a vocational degree, not a liberal arts “teach you how to think” degree. Therefore, it is believed that this would be a disadvantage. You would be better off majoring in Biology or Psychology or some other biological science.

I believe that you can major in anything that you’d like, something that you’re interested in, as long as you complete the pre-med prerequisites.

I’ve also heard that nursing is a more difficult major to have for medical school. Technically yes, you can major in whatever you want, but I wouldn’t suggest this. I would find a topic, other than medicine, that you’re really interested in and succeed in that. Take this time to find a different interest. You can practice medicine as much as you want after medical school.

My mom is a nurse and she said its harder because nurses are trained differently than doctors so they would have to spend time retraining you. It’s better to pick a different degree (it doesn’t matter really but it’s better if it’s a science) and just meet the requirements for med school. I want to be a doctor and that was my biggest concern too! Good luck!

I’ve read, not sure if this true, that medschool adcoms are reluctant to admit nursing majors because of the nationwide shortage of RNs.
