My daughter was accepted to both schools for their nursing programs and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or knowledge of either of their programs and which school has a better nursing program.

I would be asking about and comparing clinical placement opportunities.

Temple is in the middle of hospital rich Philadelphia, but probably has stiff competition for student placements from all the other nursing programs in the region.

I am not sure what kinds of facilities are near Bloomsburg.

I’m not familiar with either school, but you should also check the pass rates on the nursing boards for each school.

I have looked up the NCLEX pass rates as many people have informed me to do and have found that Bloomsburgs rate is higher than Temples, however I am new to this and dont totally understand what the rates mean exactly.
Does the lower the rate, mean the education they are learning
is not as up to par with a school with a higher pass rate. Bloomsburg is a state school and I know they dont have all the technology as somewhere like Pitt would have, but the pass rates are pretty good. Any imput on this would be appreciated as well.

Bloomsburgs most recent pass rate is almost 94% and Temple’s is about 85%, so yes, in theory Bloomsburg is doing a better job preparing future RN’s. I don’t know anything about either school, but would guess if one is state that there must be a pretty significant tuition difference. I’d be hesitant to pay big bucks for a school that is does not have a high pass rate. Bloomsburg pass rate is comparable to UPENN and Villanova, 2 excellent nursing programs. Also, keep in mind , that nursing pay (for staff RN’s anyway) is based more on years of experience. So a new grad hired to work at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, BS prepared, will make the same whether they went to a state school or a private school.

I thought Temple was a public school as well.

Temple and Bloomsburg are both state schools, but they fall under two different catagories (Pennsylvania’s weird like that). Bloomsburg would be considerably cheaper to attend than Temple both in tuition and housing, and because of the difference between small city and Philadelphia.

My niece and a friend of my daughter are both students at Bloomsburg and like it there, and feel that they are competitive for employment when they graduate.

I’d decide based on the size and location of the school and the costs rather than the nursing program itself. Would she be happier at a large school in a very urban location or at a more intimate school in a small city kinda in the middle of nowhere?

Bloomsburg is state-owned and Temple is state-related. The main difference is that Temple costs a few thousand dollars a year more.

There is a huge difference between going to college in a small town vs. the center of a large city. Bloomsburg seems like a nice college town, with an active main street next to the campus. There is a small hospital right across the street from the U. plus the huge Geissinger hospital complex 10 minutes away, plus a state hospital 10 minutes away.

The main campus of Temple is pleasant, interesting, and filling in with new housing. However, the Temple nursing school building is right next to the hospital complex, which is multiple blocks to the north. The nursing school is in a much rougher immediate neighborhood than the main campus.

Thanks for all the imput.

While you would think living in a city or living in a small town would help her decide where she wants to go to school and live, she is rather undecided on that. We are very familar with the Temple University area, my other daughter transferred there in Jan and loves it.
Its in the city there is a lot to do and places to go and see, and campus itself is very safe with a huge police force. The surrounding area around campus, not the greatest area and the nursing school is north of campus in a rougher area as Charlie mentioned. The University shuttles the nursing students from campus up to the nursing center, but I am not sure where she would do her clinical work later and this is something I need to look into.

We dont know alot about the Bloomsburg area, other than what we saw. It seems to be in a nice small town, and I obviously would feel safer having her go here. I do know that she can bring her car to campus and get around that way to her clinicals and where she needs to go, however I think she worries it just might be too boring of an area. I also got a lot of imput from a nurse I met on here, that gave me some imput of their program.

Money wise is something we are looking at as well. Temples nursing tuition is double Bloomsburgs, but with a small scholarship and a Temple grant, it is somewhat comparable overall and not a huge difference.

I think she is struggling because she really wanted to go out of state to Florida, but the school she applied and got accepted to is not a direct entry program which we didnt realize at the time when applying, and to me it just doesnt make sense to go into pre-nursing and then have to reapply and hope they accept you in Jr year for nursing. So we have narrowed it down to these 2 schools and I hope she will be happy with the decision she ends up making. ( she seems to be leaning towards Bloomsburg) .

Of the 4 direct entry nursing programs she was accepted into she has narrowed it down to these 2 and I hope she is happy with what ever decision she makes. And if anyone else has any thoughts or opinions feel free to comment. Thanks
