Nursing Program Advice?!

Hi! I'm a senior and plan on majoring in nursing. I've taken (and passed) biology, chemistry, physics, algebra 2, geometry, and pre-calc, and this year I am taking AP biology, honors statistics, honors calculus, AP psychology, and anatomy and physiology. My GPA as of right now (middle of first quarter) is a 3.55, and I got a 1660 on the SATs. Outside of school I have two jobs, one of which is in a hospital, I played sports my first freshman and sophomore year, and have been in clubs such as yearbook committee, environmental club, and on the math team. Schools I am looking to apply to are UMASS Amherst, UMASS Boston, Penn State, Quinnipiac, Salem State, University of New Hampshire, Rutgers University, and Stony Brook University. My reach school is either going to be Boston College or Northeastern. Any advice on other schools I should look into/my chances of being accepted to the schools I have applied to?

Penn State won’t say what exact scores they’re looking for but the college admissions counselor emailed me saying that if you’re allowed to list 2 schools on your application. So basically, if i listed 2 colleges and I didnt get into the first choice (ex: University Park), they would automatically consider me for my second choice (ex:Mont Alto).

Quinnipiac is looking for a 1200 SAT & 27 ACT. However, the college admissions counselor emailed me saying that they accept student with lower and higher scores. I only have a 1000 (CR+M) but got a priority app from them, so I might just apply anyway. Who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky lol!!

Rutgers has 3 campuses – New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. Rutgers New Brunswick would definitely be a reach, and so would Newark. Try Camden? It’s a realllly dangerous area, but the college itself has its own police crew. I’ve been told that the campus is very safe and you really won’t witness anything sketchy. However, it’s a different story when you go outside the campus… :/

Whats your CR+M SAT score? Nursing schools don’t look at writing, so subtract that score from 1660. I’m assuming you have an average of 550 on each section so here are some schools that I recommend with the CR+M requirement next to it:

EASY:

Neumann 850 - 1000
Shenandoah 900
Marymount (idk but supposedly its quite easy)
Robert Morris 1000
Edinboro (i think it was a 1000, idk but its def. easy)
Indiana Univ. of PA (again, idk but its def. easy)
Holy Family (“pretty much guaranteed acceptance with a score of 500 in each section” -their college counselor)
Fairleigh Dickinson 1000 (there are 2 campuses & both have nursing)
Alvernia 1000
Moravian 1000
Adelphi 1500 - 1580 (they actually count the writing so your overall SAT fits the requirements)
Pace (idk but a friend who goes there said that usually a 1650 is enough, btw nursing is only at the Pace Pleasantville/Westchester (idk why but the college uses both towns to describe its campus, it means the same thing))
Widener 1030
Duquesne 1030
York 1030
Desales 1050
East Stroudsburg 1050
Seton Hall 1040 (they have an AWESOME program!! its one of my top choices  )
Sacred Heart 1080

REACHES?

Salve Regina 1000 - 1100 (BEAUTIFUL campus, looks like a castle if i remember correctly)
Endicott 1100
Scranton 1150
Quinnipiac 1200
Fairfield 1166 - 1280
Rutgers (varies by campus so click link: http://admissions.rutgers.edu/academics/admissionsprofile.aspx</a> )

I can not detect from the information you have given if you are a male or female. If you are a female, perhaps you should consider Simmons College in Boston. They have a very solid, long established nursing program and the campus is walking distance from where many of the clinicals [absolutely top notch medical facilities] would be [ie. Brigham and Womens, Childrens Hosp., Deaconess/Beth Israel]. I would not worry about the all female school because Simmons is surrounded by 15 other colleges & universites [MIT, Harvard, BU, Northeastern etc] and the location in Boston is great - the best college town in the world!

You may want to look at U Vermont [Burlington - another great little college town], U Conn, UMass, Dartmouth and UMass, Lowell also.

You may want to take the SAT again this fall with some prep to increase your scores - shoot for 1800 - would give you more options. Have you taken the ACT? Some students do better on the ACT than SAT.

Best of luck to you!

By the way, there is a Nursing major thread under College Majors, which may be helpful to you. Many similar threads like yours have been previously posted.

I have similar stats to you so I was just wondering where you ended up applying and if youve gotten any acceptes yet if you dont mind sharing/

Quinnipiac and Fairfield are admitting students with less than 500 this year…kinda surprising, but they are they ares the most expensive of all the schools so they probably need students. The big universities want high numbers…too many quit/fail early weeder classes in nursing school from what our guidance counselor told us during a college prep session.
