Hi everyone!
I’m a current junior in high school and am looking into nursing schools! I live in Ohio so I’m mainly looking at schools in the state but I am interested in a few that are not. I just need some help on whether or not you guys think I could get into these schools and if you have any more recommendations for me!
Stats:
GPA: unweighted: 4.0 weighted: 4.4
ACT: 30 (E-33, R-36, M-26, S-25) I’m studying really hard and retaking it in February and I’m sure I can get it up to a 32/33
APs: 2 so far, 3 by graduation
Numerous honors and dual credit
Extra curricular: class officer fr. year, 6th grade camp counselor jr and sr year, freshman mentor jr -maybe sr year-, student council sr year, NHS, volunteering with historical society (however no medical volunteering)
Schools:
Safeties: Kent st, mt. Union
Target: Miami u, Xavier, Ohio U, u of Alabama (however Alabama is a bit far)
Reach: UMich, NYU
Do you qualify for need-based aid? If so, consider St. Olaf which meets need and has an excellent nursing program with direct-admit.
If you’re full-pay minus merit, consider Truman State, which is Missouri’s honors LAC and has an excellent direct-entry BSN program. The “sticker price” is very affordable, especially with MESP reciprocity, and you’d qualify for additional auto-merit. It’s a really great mid-sized school - good student quality of life and very well-regarded nursing.
Have you tried an SAT practice test? The SAT doesn’t have a science section (which was your weakest subscore on the ACT) and the math section tends to be a little less rushed than the ACT, so it might be better suited for your strengths.
Any specific reason that U of Cincinnati isn’t on your in-state list? Their direct-entry BSN includes additional paid co-op experience in addition to the normal clinical rotations, which can be really beneficial.
Also, CWRU could be a good addition to your reach list. And if you’re considering UMich, also look at Michigan State - you’d have merit potential there.
No I don’t believe I’ll qualify for need based but I will look into those schools as well thank you! And I did take the PSAT and I scored okay (1240) but I will look into the SAT further. The science section is my most challenging section on the ACT by far. UCinci was on my list as they do have a great nursing program but I when I looked into the school and it’s atmosphere it just didn’t click with me. Oh and yes CWRU is on my reach list I just forgot to add it haha. Thanks again so much for the advice and recommendations!!!
there is a nursing forum here, you’d be better off posting there to get people focused on nursing. Also reading thru previous posts there is informative.
I don’t know about Ohio schools, but at the top of your list should be direct-admit programs for nursing. Also do you have volunteer experience in nursing? This is a real key; you wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a ride, you shouldn’t pick a career without spending some time getting exposure to the field
