Got the Coming Days status last friday…found out on Monday!

I was accepted at Erie for a 1+3 program (one year Erie, three at UP). Only NINETY of ONE THOUSAND people were accepted - or so admissions told me. I visited the campus today and everyone just kept congratulating me. Seems to be very very competitive. I am ecstatic to be accepted…I did not expect to be admitted!

Already put down a deposit! See you August 19th

@megsshrubs, I did not think I would be accepted either…they accepted only 90/1000 applicants…I was sooo expecting the whole “we regret to inform you” shindig. The admissions people said they spread out the acceptances over a few days since they are expecting 910 angry people to be calling haha! They told me it was a huge honor to be accepted and they said it is one of their most difficult programs to be accepted to. There are only 9 other students at Erie who have been offered the 3+1 program which I’m really excited about - I’m OOS and Erie is only about 2 hours from where I live and UP is like 4…it will be a good way to ease into college :)

@Lulu311 I agree with you completely!! I’m truly honored to be accepted and I am attending!! I sent in my deposit yesterday. I also think its insane that they only accept such a small number but very happy i got in! Maybe I’ll see you up there!! Im in state, near Pittsburgh, so UP is about 3 hours from me which isnt too bad. Im about 10 minutes away from the Beaver campus, which i totally wouldve been okay with going to first. Anyway, im rambling, haha Congrats!!!

Quick question: Did Penn State say that only accepted 90 applicants, or that there were 90 slots.

For example, if they accepted 180 applicants, and they filled 90 slots with the 50% who decided to attend Penn State, that would be an 18% acceptance rate. In comparison, if they really only accepted 90 students, that would be a 9% acceptance rate, which is lower than most Ivies.

there are 90 nursing slots at penn state – not sure how many they offer to fill the 90

@charlieschm Admissions said that 1300 people applied to the nursing major. They accepted 110 total, 77 to UP and 33 to satellite campuses.

Thanks Meg.

i was recently accepted at UP for nursing.
Is it true that you have to spend junior and senior year at Hershey campus for clinicals?
Or is it possible to stay the entire 4 years at UP?

I’m pretty sure you only have to spend your junior or your senior year at Hershey, not both. I think they ask you which you’d prefer, but they can’t guarantee that they can send you during the year you want.

The only ways to get out of it is if you’re in ROTC, blue band, a certain sport, or Schreyers (there may be a couple scenarios I’m forgetting). You can also get out of it if you find someone else in the nursing program that would swap with you, so you’d do 2 years at UP and they’d do 2 years in Hershey.

Honestly though, I would go to Hershey if I were you. Back when I was considering PSU’s Nursing School, I really did not want to have to leave UP for one year, but in the long run I knew it would be worth it if I wanted to be the best nurse I could be. You’re just not going to see the kind of exciting cases and gain the kind of experience in State College as you would in Hershey. In the end, you’re going to college to gain a good education, and when it comes to nursing, first hand experience is a big part of that.

I would try to go to Hershey senior year. There is only one small hospital in State College. If you don’t go to Hershey, you may spend hours and hours on highways (including early mornings) driving to other hospitals and facilities for clinicals.

Hershey is supposed to be a great learning experience because it is such a huge set of modern facilities, including a brand new pediatrics facility. It is close enough that you could still come back to State College for some weekends.

I have already consulted with my counselor at Erie and she made it very clear that you can stay at UP and they actually recommend you do! I am doing a 1+3 and she said they only offer the sophomore, junior and senior classes at UP but clinicals are done at Hershey. I don’t know if maybe I was misunderstood? She said that with nursing they can only do one year at an alternate campus which is why it can’t be a 2+2 or anything
