trying to figure this out: will apply to UW Seattle next spring; good gpa/SATs, etc, and so feel pretty good about getting accepted. have been researching nursing programs.. extremely competitive at uw seattle for nursing school and I don't want to count on getting in as from what I have seen re who gets in, it is nothing I could count on. I really want to go to UW Seattle.. can I go for a year, get some undergrad credits in (I will have almost 80 running start/AP credits), enjoy the experience of UW that I have been dreaming about, then possibly get into nursing program at Bothell? is this a stupid thought? I am trying to reconcile going to my dream school, getting into the field I want to be in and the likelihood I may not get into UW nursing.. thoughts/suggestions? there is always seattle U too, but so expensive..

sorry i am confuse. do you want to get into uw bothell or seattle? (apply to both. you can always try to transfer to the place yo like the most.) also, i think each campus has its own set of requirements.

@milliedawg I am a Nursing/Public Health major at UW Seattle… I am trying to get into the Nursing program too. But, I am doubting myself because it is extremely competitive. I am currently in the Public Health program and it is my backup or second major. Just to let you know that, the UW Bothell is a RN to BSN Nursing program, which means that you MUST first obtain a two-year Associate of Arts & Science in NURSING at a local community college (everett, shoreline, lake washington tech etc) and a WA state RN license before entering to the UW Bothell program.

Hope that helps!

This is just one anecdote re: how hard it is to get into the UW nursing program: A girl we’ve know since she was in kindergarten went to the UW with the intention of studying nursing. She was an excellent student - one of those kids who is being encouraged in middle school to skip high school and go straight to the UW. (She didn’t do that.) In spite of excellent grades in all the prerequisite courses at the UW, when it came time to apply for the nursing program, she was rejected. She majored in something else health related. She went on to apply to medical school after graduation, and was accepted at the UW medical school, as well as Yale and others. So she had the credentials to get into top medical schools, but not the UW nursing school.

If you really are set on being a nurse, in my opinion you would be better off going to a school where you apply to the nursing program as a freshman admit: Gonzaga, U of Portland, SPU, Seattle U, Pacific Lutheran. There are still no guarantees with those programs - it is still possible to not be allowed to continue in the program if you don’t do well in the early courses, but the odds are better. Or go the community college route and get an RN, then go on to earn a BSN at UW Bothell later.
