My S applied for the Nutmeg scholarship for the 2013-2014 school year. He received a letter last week stating that 15 kids would be called after today if they were finalists and those 15 would be invited to the school in a few weeks for an interview...well...the call came tonight and he is one of the 15!!! Does this mean he got the scholarship?

I’m not certain on this one because I can’t find any source on UConn’s website at the moment, but I believe they only offer 8 Nutmeg Scholarships per year. I’ve read this in various articles (ie X School within UConn has 3 of 8 Nutmeg Scholars this year), and from some presentations by honors program employees that I admittedly wasn’t paying the most attention to.

In addition, the final round of interviews implies that there’s some further narrowing down to be done. Why would they be called in for one last interview if they’ve all been offered the scholarship already?

Regardless, your son will probably get a very generous scholarship, and there are always more to apply for on a national level and for UConn students only. Also I think the finalists get a very personalized tour when they go up to be interviewed, which is nice because the majority of UConn’s tours are pretty uninteresting.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Been doing some searching today and found the application online that his guidance counselor submitted - we never saw that part - and it states that the school will make its final selection in March 2013. I agree that there must be some whittling down from the 15 selected but I am surprised at how little information I can find online about this. 8/15 would make sense considering the interview process. Nevertheless, looking forward to the opportunity and the personalized tour.

Question: if we have not been contacted by now, I’m assuming this means that we are not finalists, correct?

@ealdi94 - wondering if you received a letter last week? It said the 15 finalists would be contacted after 12/3…my son was called on 12/3, but you never know, maybe they didn’t call them all on the same day? The interview is 12/15 - best of luck w/ your college search!

@meridenmom Thank you for the wishes! It doesn’t look like I’m a finalist, but oh well. Still hoping for a pretty generous package from UConn (I think CT public high school valedictorians get to go tuition free?)

Yes, I believe that is correct - CT public schools vals and sals are offered the Presidential scholarship which is free tuition…realizing the cost of a 4 yr education today that is an amazing opportunity at a great school.

Be aware that the “full tuition” from the Presidential Scholarship isn’t exactly that. They offer you whatever the cost of tuition will be for the first semester you attend, and then they subtract that amount from your bill every semester. In reality, tuition increases by about 5% a year.

This is done at essentially all schools though, unless you have a special agreement with the university, or you attend an Ivy that has some extra endowment money to spread around. So it means that whatever the best deal is when the offer is made will likely still be the best deal in four years.

Somewhat misleading for those who think they don’t have to pay “any tuition” - myself included! Thanks so much for the clarification!

It’s also not guaranteed, per the website

When my daughter was awarded the Presidential a year and a half ago, it also did not include the fees, which are considerable and tend to increase annually. To me, those fees are a sneaky way to be able to say that the tuition is “low”.

To be fair, though, the award did come with a one time stipend. I think it was $2000, and it could be used for things like study abroad, research, etc. I don’t know the specifics, though, because my daughter chose to attend another college. However, looking at the cost of many study abroad programs, even short term ones, that $2000 would not go far. I would be really interested in how many of those $2000 grants go unused because students cannot afford the other costs of the program they are interested in. I also can’t be certain that this is still part of the scholarship. It seems to me that UCONN is becoming much more attractive to in state students due to the costs of college exploding everywhere, and maybe they no longer need to offer this particular incentive to attract top students. eta: the stipend is $2500.

Yes, the stipend is $2,500. Yes, it’s still awarded. From what I got at an info session for it a couple months ago, it must simply have an “educational” component. I really have no idea how much the study abroad program costs, but I know that there are some schools UConn partners with so that you can take classes there for the cost of UConn tuition (close to zero because the Presidential Scholarship can still be applied). So if you really wanted to study abroad anyways, it certainly helps.

I probably should have noted that by they kind of hide the sticker price of the university by combining tuition and fees on most popular websites. For example College Board has it at around $11,200 this year, but about $2,500 of that is fees.

I’m not sure if you still have to apply by December 1st to receive the scholarship. I know it was an issue last year because many people were offered honors/academic scholarships because anyone who applied EA received preferential treatment. With the date for everyone (except special program applicants) moved back to January 15, however, they’ve probably extended all of the deadlines.

Update…my son was notified today that he was awarded the Nutmeg Scholarship - just a week after his interview - nice timing right before the holidays! Thanks UConn!!!

It seems these posts are from this time last year. My daughter got her letter saying that she would be notified after 12/4 if she got an interview. Has anyone heard from uconn yet and received an interview?

I’m applying for the scholarship this year, got a letter about 15 finalists but no call (as of yet).

my daughter got the call yesterday and her interview is on dec 14th

So I’m guessing mine won’t be getting an interview.
