NVCC -goal-> UC

Hello guys I just graduated high school with a low 2.something gpa and I will be attending Northern Virginia Community College this upcoming fall. I realized that education was important a bit late and did no work in school. I was wondering if anyone has transfered from nova to a UC school or any in California and which credits are transferable??

It depends on which UC you are looking at, and how much you are able to pay. The U.C.'s are accepting more OOS transfers because they need the large tuition $$ that OOS students pay.

For the top 3 UC’s–Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD–you would also need impeccable stats.

There are so many great colleges in VA, that you could attend for a much better price, that I think it might be wiser to consider those rather than a UC.

Jw what is OOS?

OOS=Out of State

I agree that to get into a UC as an OOS student you would need very high college stats (I would aim for a 3.8+) and also not require and financial assistance beyond the usual Stafford loans. Meaning that the UCs like OOS students because they charge more for tuition and offer less or zero actual in-state based grants or aid. They will want to turn a profit on an OOS student,.

You seem to sound as if any UC in California would do – if so be sure to apply to the lesser ranked UCs where competition may be less tough. There are many privates in California as well if you have the money to afford them that would be happy to take an OOS transfer student. A 3.0 - 3.5 is often enough for Loyola Marymount, USF, Santa Clara University, St Mary’s. Mills College and others, though I would still advise to reach the higher end of that range.

There is no way to tell you which classes at NVCC will transfer to a UC or CA private school (and you won’t find out until AFTER you get accepted because no college wants to plow through a random list) so you need to take General Ed courses and Intro to your Major courses that seem most similar to the IGETC set of classes (for UCs). The privates often follow a similar path as IGETC but you need to look up their general ed requirements and do the best matching you can from those.

You would do well taking a college level math (but not Trig), college level English Comp and possibly the second in that kind of sequence, one or two science courses (Bio and Chem are fairly fool-proof for transfer) at least one with a lab, 1 - 3 Social Science classes (Intro to Anthro, Intro to Soc). Specifically for IGETC here in California: Intro Polit Sci and a US History class. Finish 1st year of college level foreigm language. Etc. To get more specific you just need to look at an IGETC form and make best guesses of what is similar between your school and the target college. And again, take intro sequences for your major as well.

UCSD is pretty easy to get into if you’re in state. I’m sure it’s harder OoS. 3.3 GPA and competion of preeqs pretty much does it if you’re instate.

go to [Welcome to ASSIST](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>http://assist.org/) then see what courses you need. Make a list. Then find a counselor at both your CC and UCSD and try to come with a list of courses to take.

FYI, there’s an entire forum dedicated to UC transfers.

I would suggest aiming for UVA as well just on the merit of principle. It doesn’t hurt to have options.

thanks for the replies guys. I have another question though: I checked the IGETC website and read that it was mostly for general ed? If i know what my major is do I follow the information on this website? [Transfer Prep - Letters and Science majors - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/lsmajors.htm)
With some of the required classes you have to take for a degree listed on the IGETC form?
