Can anybody give me some tips for the English Regents? I am taking it tomorrow and Thursday and I'm really worried.

Also, can somebody help me go over the themes from:
-Huck Finn
-The Crucible
-The Scarlet Letter
-The Great Gatsby
and
-Macbeth
?

I don't want to be a moocher, but there have got to be some English mavens here.

Thanks a lot; CC rocks!

or
www.sparknotes.com

come on man... you should know these sites :(

i know the great gatsby and macbeth really well, however im too lazy to type it. sorry :(

well i'm studying for my math final tonight and the critical lens won't be until thursday so I'll help you out tomorrow evening, because I should start studying for my english final which has an essay on those books+death of a salesman, fences, and grapes of wrath.

I did get 100 on the English Regents this January though :)

Its really quite easy.
use sparknotes to make a chart like this:
Column 1: Book, Author, Genre
Column 2: Main Characters
Column 3: Main Themes
Column 4: Symbols, Motifs, etc.
Column 5: Random Information

and fill it out using sparknotes and your general knowledge. that's what I'll be doing.

did anyone just take it?
for the essays, i didn't really state my purpose for the second one. like i didn't say "science class you should blah blah..." i used "we" and "our future" a lot though. is that ok?

also...some mc i was wondering

I just took it. IT WAS SO EASY! wendy, if you remember the questions, I think we can share answers.

On my first essays, I had 2 body paragraphs. One was centered around reading (the anecdotes of the two women that impacted his life), and the other centered around writing (when he pursued his dream).Reading gave him the power to overcome fear and continue on his horrible life, and writing gave him the power to lead a happy life--both essentially saving his life.

On my second essay, I wrote about technology (the chart) used to closely moniter volcanoes in the firs body. In my second body, I talked about the videos they distributed to educate the people, and I also included the success stories.

Compare?

here's what i remember answers were:
rescue
get warm
chaotic
follow his dream
informal apprenticeship
stimulating

2nd passage: unpredictability (all volcanoes share this property)
ignore warnings
most devastating (decade volcanoes)
number of residents evacuated
authorities (who were vidoes made for)
lack of funding
speed (pyroclastic)
motion
slope
promising (for satellite)

got same?

My first essay sucked really, really bad.

My second was slightly better:
1st body: people in danger
2nd body: catastrophic effects of eruptions
3rd body: public edification and technological development

In retrospect, I should have merged the 1st and 2nd, and split the 3rd.

same answers or no??

anyone....

Yup, same answers. I was just unsure about the apprentice thing because it sounded formal.

I was unsure about the promising for the satellite.

I got all the same answers for sure on the 1st one. Most of our answers for the 2nd one I don;t remember, but I think they all match.

My essay format was EXACTLY like Sungchul's and my MC answers match with wendy's...the hardest part of the test is over and it was very easy.

Then again, I can't talk really. After writing 3 essays in 2 hours (AP), 2 essays in 3 hours is a walk in the park XD

I'm just using Lord of the Flies and 1984. Two Books with several themes regarding society and human nature.

I think I'm going to use The Great Gatsby for sure, because it's the most recent book we've reviewed in class. My second book is going to be either Othello, The Crucible, 1984, or Green Eggs and Ham.

Do you think they'd frown upon Green Eggs and Ham?

Do we have to use books from the past year for this?

If I read 1984 in 10th grade, can I use that? I know it better than this year's books.

I thought the first essay was ook, I don't think I did amazing though.
The second essay was a breeze, but I had only so-so organization so I don't know how that will turn out.

As for the mc, I got all the same answers except for the one about the guy's home life, I thought it was chaotic but then I overthought it and went with dull. But I'm quite happy with missing one. :)

You can use any book you know well and fits.

do you think that schools will be biased toward books in their 11th grade curricula?

no way!
they're tired of reading the same books over and over.
as long as you use famous books and you're fine.

btw, was the 2nd question: discuss what volcanologists are doing to lessen dangers of volcanos?

hope so
