NY Rural private schools

I have already thought of these:

Cornell
Colgate
Hamilton
RPI
Vassar

They are great schools BUT I don't know if S will have the stats for them. His goal is to increase GPA and study for SAT1 and SAT 2's but so far he has been a steady 85-90 student. He will be HS jr this fall and we are trying to motivate him.

What do you know of these schools and how do they fall in ranking of academic rigor and if they are well regarded:

Hobart William Smith
Alfred
SUNY Oneonta
Clarkson
Union

We will need sufficient fin aid and he would like SMALL( 2500-3500) school probally a LAC that is a need-based school.

He is not sure what he wants to study. He is strongest and enjoys Math most ( about a 90 avg) He is taking Pre Calc this yr and Calc 12th grade. Physics and Forensic Science(AP) and a HS engineering course this yr. He will have about 5 AP courses all together upon 12th grade graduation( Govt, Economics, either Chem or Physics, Literature,US History)

He LOVES Rural outdoors and wants a college RURAL NY only. He is not flexible on that.

We were thinking engineering ( civil?/other...he loves working and building outdoors...conservation)

He is not interested in enviromental science...he says he is not crazy about Sciences but LOVES math. He is not interested in Finance at all.

He was for a time interested in the military, but is losing steam on that.

Now he says he wants to be a police officer.

we want him to have at least a solid 4 yr education behind him because he may change his mind after he graduates Hs, and the police test is only given every few yrs anyway. We tell him he can take the test and join the Police force if that is still what he wants and we support him in that but that he should go for a BA or BS to get a solid education too.

he reluctantly agrees. We were looking at Criminal Justice Programs but there did not seem to be many, at least not in Rural NY. SUNY Oneonta has one. But I get the impression Criminal Justice academia is weak and not well formed as a whole in many schools. I* know John Jay in NYC is good but he wants RURAL NY.

So we are researching engineering and Mathamatics, also Political Science or Govt or Economics since he seems to do well in the subjects and they are good backgrounds for many future careers. His PLAN( from hs gc visit) tells us his major interests are engineering, distribution, processing, geosciences, mechanical, also investigating......police officer was mentioned.

Any advice to a mother of a teen S who wants to be a cop and thinks ( his quote)"it's too early to think about college". He tells me " to be a Police Officer I can go to any college and study anything so it does'nt make a difference which college he chooses they all are fine. His only request that it is in Rural NY,And sighs when I suggest going to visit some campuses this summer? LOL........any other parent's been here w/ thier teen?

Try Siena, St. Bonaventure, LeMoyne, Alfred U.

If being in a rural area of NY is really the top issue, the list is long. Have you taken a look at Skidmore? Ithaca? Bard? SUNY Geneseo? (It's small for a public school and very rural.)

SUNY Geneseo could be a good choice. Union is the best academic school of your next five. I would think St. Lawrence & Hartwick should be on there before Alfred. Otherwise, after mentioning Skidmore & Ithaca, I think you covered everything. There was recenly another thread with almost the exact same title to it that you may want to find.

Bard's location in Annandale-on-Hudson is definitely rural, and they're really pressing to attract math and science majors. There's also a 3-2 engineering program with Columbia, and he might even be able to pull hefty scholarship there. The Distinguished Science Scholarship is available through application to math and science majors and offers a four-year full ride. Also, Bard really doesn't go by numbers alone in the admissions process. He'd have to be willing to write essays, though, since everyone goes through a writing-intensive First-Year Seminar; if he's adverse to that, another NY college would be better.

he seems like a stubborn kid. chances are probably not want to be a cop after college graduation. college is, after all, about broadening your horizons.

suny new paltz, hartwick, elmira, niagara are all matches. reaching a bit would be hamilton, union, ithaca.

Columbia is very far from rural. If going the engineering route, RPI would be a better bet.

For me, RPI is not really rural

I agree. It's kind of rural, kind of small, run-down, old town, but still comes closer than a school in the most populated urban area in the U.S.

Aren't you in luck- just about every SUNY is in a remote- rural area of upstate NY. Get thee the Suny viewbook or check the website. A number of them have engineering programs- some are combined 3/2 programs with other universities- such as engineering program between Geneseo asnd U of Rochester or Fredonia and U of Vermont. Most of the Suny colleges are a bit bigger than you are looking 4,000-8000 students. but not too big. SUNY Albany has a very good criminal justice program- but Albany is one of the few campuses that is not rural. My d will be going to Suny Cortland/sports management program. Good luck.
Ooops! Just realized you were looking at private schools- I guess I noticed Suny Oneonta- so I mentioned some of the other SUNY schools- Check out website collegesofdistinction.com They have a nice list of colleges in NY state. That may give you some direction.

www.oswego.edu it is on Lake Ontario and is a BEAUTIFUL Campus. It is also featured in

www.collegesofdistinction.com

I am an alum and I can attest to it being a very good Liberal Arts College and is absolutely goregous year round. The caveat is the cold canadian air blowing in off of Lake Ontario in the winter! If Money is an issue, check out the "Oswego Guarentee", the school pretty much freezes room and board at freshman rates for the duration of study. Along with the SUNY tuition, it is a great deal, too! I think they also have 2 plus 2 with Cornell, SU, etc.

Clarkson would be a good choice, too
