NYC Accepted Student Reception

Last week Cal Poly sent me an invitation to attend an accepted student reception in NYC on March 19th. I’ll be going of course, is anyone else here attending? I thought it was quite unusual that they would host an event in NYC, especially since it’s a pretty snazzy event; I guess they’re trying to woo out of stater’s like me - I have no problem with that :)

If anyone went to one of these in the past, what was it like? was it more of a presentation, or just walking around asking questions?

I wish they had something like this when I was a freshman coming from out of state. I’d go if I were you. I think there are usually a decent amount of people coming from the New England region, so I’m not too surprised they’d chose to host an event in NYC.

My daughter attended an accepted student reception in Denver last year - it was hosted by the Alumni Association and held downtown at a very nice restaurant, Maggiano’s. It was a very nice classy affair with hors d’oeuvres, inspiring presentations about Cal Poly, and opportunities to mingle with other accepted students, current Cal Poly students, and some alumni. The students were later divided up into small groups and my daughter had the opportunity to talk to a current biomedical engineering student, which was perfect as she was seriously considering that field. My daughter was very impressed and surprised/comforted by the number of other Colorado students that were interested in attending Cal Poly, and was ready to accept their offer of admission after that event. She is now a happy Cal Poly freshman majoring in biomedical engineering!

Is it just for students, or did you go with your daughter?

How cool! I did not know that Cal Poly did these types of out of state receptions! Nice to know.

frznpixel: The event was for students and their parents, and I think some of the attending parents were Cal Poly alumni! It was a warm and welcoming affair, and we’re both glad that we attended. The Alumni Association also hosted a summer picnic later in August at a local park. Nice way for fellow out-of-state students to meet before school started.
