NYC prep schools

I was wondering if any current students, parents, or anyone with knowledge in this matter could provide me with information regarding the following NYC prep schools from a personal perspective (there's only so much that statistics can tell me):

Brearly
Spence
Dalton
Horace Mann
Nightingale-Bamford
Trinity

My cousin is applying for high schools (primarily in NYC as that's where she lives) for the class of 2011 and in the interests of providing as much help as I can, I was wondering what valuable insights you guys at CC might offer. Also, please feel free to suggest other schools she might want to consider (small class size, and all-girls are a plus, but especially academic excellence), my knowledge of NYC preps is rather limited. Thank you very much.

Some more information:

My cousin is rather shy and recently moved from Japan (her English is at the native level, however) with a strong aptitude in mathematics, so schools that would support those aspects are of interest.

Any takers? Even the slightest comment will be of help.

Chapin should be on the list. They are all really hard to get into, since there are so few openings every year.

Really? Hmm, I've never heard of Chapin. Although judging by their website it looks very nice. What do you know about it?

I'd strongly recommend the United Nations International School since your cousin is from Japan. I got in and wish I had gone there instead. So much diversity. I had a bad experience at one of the "prep schools" you mentioned. They're amazing academically, but they're not a good fit for everyone, epsecially since you say your cousin is shy.

Actually, she attends UNIS right now but they're looking for another school, not exactly clear on the details there. Maybe it only goes to 8th grade?

Is the social scene at some of the NYC preps kind of cliquey-Mean Girl-ish? Because that certaintly would not be good, and you mentioned you had a bad experience at one of those schools. I heard Mean Girls was partially based on Brearly so I was a little apprehensive about the social scene there...
