Hi so my friend and her D are going to Unifieds this wknd. Already has hotel near pearl studios etc. however the mom has let her D do most of the MT college audition scheduling & research etc. awesome… except for now it appears after talking to her yesterday that the girl thought you could just “ go “ to Unifieds and audition. Like do all walk ins. No formally scheduled auditions… so I’m confirming today if this is true but if it is & they have no scheduled schools, do you think it’s worth them still going?
My D is a college soph in an MT program so I truly am “ asking for a friend” lol.
The mom knows to reach out to me since we went through this whole insane thing before but my D did not attend nyc Unifieds & im unsure of the walk in situation historically
Thanks all!
@theaterwork NY unifieds have scheduled auditions , as well as walk ins. 2 years ago, D did one or two because she really didn’t have that much down time. There was another group of schools(5 or 6) that did a walk in combined audition not too far from where the unifieds were held. I know Shenandoah & SW Missouri and maybe Ariz St were part of it then. It was good because it was one audition for the whole group of schools.
@theaterwork FYI there is an NYC combines 2019 thread with all the info on the schools and the process
Thanks @Jjrmom8 I forgot about that combined audition ! They could go to that since it’s first come first serve . I am just concerned they will come and she won’t get to audition very many places if she doesn’t have ANY scheduled auditions. I am trying to confirm with the mom if they have any at all scheduled formally. It’s a lot of $ to travel for them etc /get hotel and then it be for naught!
@theaterwork we went last year and there were walk ins available. Tell them to go EARLY and often. Also, have her check with her applied to schools, maybe they have a cancellation or opening. Usually, on get accepted the schools had their full schedule for the kids to look at. If she is interested in Cap 21/Molloy have her email Rebecca Overton I know her email was posted on one of the threads. Never hurts to ask.
@theaterwork That’s Acceptd…I hate spell check
Eek! Make sure they are aware, that while yes, there will be some walk-ins available, there may not be for any of the schools she was interested in since she didn’t schedule any auditions. Have her check with her applied to schools, as maybe (?) they will give her a spot since she obviously didn’t understand the process. Wouldn’t hurt to ask. The suggestion above about the Combines above is a good call, though again, if none of those schools were on her list…I feel like hyperventilating for them.
@theaterwork Also there is a thread “Master List of “Unified Audition” Schools” with some helpful info about walk ins in previous years. Just as a guide-not set in stone. Good luck to your friend
All of the above are great suggestions: (1) Go to the Combine and get there EARLY as it is first come first served. (2) call all schools she has applied to (or go to their room the first day) and maybe they can put you on some type of waitlist if they have a cancellation; (2) see how many schools will take a walk in. Good Luck!
So I’m wondering if she actually applied to any of the Unified schools… yikes I need to find out the whole situation. I think she just thought she could go and show up and audition for whoever. I will look up other threads to see some schools that typically have taken walk ins in past years. That would be a start. Plus the combined one.
Will the schools reject her from walk in if she hasn’t academically applied to the school though? I’m thinking she could do that after she got home …
^^^usually the student applies to the school AFTER the walk-in. Two of my kids applied in the hotel room that evening after a school they really liked - and emailed the school counselor to complete the package after they returned from Unifieds.
Some schools require you apply before you do a walk in and some don’t. Some let you do it right there and some may want you to be accepted first. Honestly, it’s all different. If she has already applied, she may get preference for walk ins, but the more popular schools typically don’t take any walk ins. She should have a plan each morning and arrive at 7:30 and start walking the studios. She should look up all the locations for the schools too when she gets there. A notebook, headshots in hand and a calendar handy. I seem to remember NYC having the least walk ins since it’s so short. She may wish to consider going to another Unified and trying to schedule…LA usually has the most availability, but I know some schools don’t go there…it really depends on her list and what types of schools she is looking for.
Here are some schools who did walk ins last year in NYC: Hartt(University of Hartford), Arts, Rutgers, Temple, Ball State, fordham(on campus), Cap 21/Molloy(at 50 Broadway), Roosevelt CCPA, Syracuse, Western Michigan and Ithaca. Some were MT and others acting. Make sure she brings a CHECKBOOK! Also, she will need a wireless speaker /recorded music cuts as not all have accompanist.
@theaterwork - if she didn’t even apply anywhere, and since not many (ie under the amount of schools that most female MT applicants would apply to) schools take walk-ins at NYC Unifieds, you may want to broach the subject of going a BA route, or taking a GAP year. I also agree with loribelle’s thoughts about trying to schedule some auditions at another Unified location if at all possible. NYC Unifieds are short and at least when D attended a few years back, there were only a handful that accepted walk-ins.
Thanks all for the advice. I am passing all this along & what they decide they decide I guess. I will remind them about the checkbook and the speaker too!
