Hi I have a question about the amazing NYC. So I’m a college freshman taking next semester off to focus myself. I was planning on doing things like community theatre, but I’m also like an hour train ride from NYC, and people from our town usually make weekend trips there for classes and such. I’m already planning there to go for MTCA consulting, but I was wondering if anyone could help me situate myself in the metropolis, since I’ve really never been there as more than a tourist. What boroughs and areas of NYC are more “theater” heavy and what areas do you think I can find more community groups or troupes, and definitely quality classes in acting and voice? I mean obviously everywhere, but if anyone can give me any recommendations or tips?
Also if anyone knows any forums or groups for theater peoples and specifically NYC that would be awesome, thanks so much! Cc is really helpful for these things, especially since I’ve got like no experience w the drama side of college apps
You can take dance classes at BDC or Steps. There’s really no reason to do community theater in NYC unless there’s not a community theater in your area. Are you currently majoring in theatre? Use Backstage and Playbill Edu. Do you have a plan in place for next fall because now is the time to be applying for fall of 2017. There are lots of voice and acting teachers in NYC. Decide what method and choose from there. Expect to pay $100 for a half hour and up. I think your plan to start with MTCA is probably a good idea. I haven’t worked with them so hopefully they can help you navigate the training you are looking for.
$100 for a half-hour sounds high to me. We’re in New York, and my daughter goes to an amazing, highly respected voice teacher, and she charges $100 for 45 minutes and $120 for an hour, or a discounted package of $500 for 5 lessons if you pay upfront.
@Ducky312 I’m not interested in dance, and you technically don’t declare majors yet but yes I am. I have a list of schools but most applications aren’t due until like April.
@actorparent can you give me more details?
Thanks to both of you
@collegefreshmanpink, I PMed you.
@collegefreshmanpink - @Ducky312 is correct that auditions for next falls college drama majors are coming up fast. Most will be between this December and February. While general applications to a school may not be due until the spring, in order to schedule an audition you often have to apply to a school first. This is for transfer students too. Audition based programs are a whole different world than regular college admissions.
If you are applying to non-audition schools than you may have until April as you mentioned. Just wanted to clarify so you aren’t surprised later if audition spots are booked. Most people are scheduled by November or December at latest. Many say to have all auditions scheduled by October. (Not to have done the auditions by then but to have the spots to audition reserved).
Additionally, several schools have an earlier deadline for drama majors than general applications (deadline to apply is often in Nov or Dec for drama majors). Check each schools website
This drama forum on CC has tons of great info on auditions and applications for drama schools/majors.
