NYIT 7 year BS/DO Program

Did anyone here apply? How is the program, and is there anyone here who is currently enrolled? In general, what have you guys heard about the program?

Bump 10char

BUMP! Can anyone answer my question?

Well I never applied for nyit but i do attend a bs/do program. I don’t really know mich about them so i really can’t answer much about them specifiaclly but if you have questions about bs/do in genereal maybe i could help.

I applied and was accepted, but I have heard several negative reveiws. I am going to be visting soon to see for myself.

I got in as well!! Congrats!!
in my opinion:
pros:

 1. close to home (for me)
 2. relatively cheap (especially since you end up saving a year)
 3. manageable work load ( i know 3 people who are currently in/have gone through the program)
 4. friendly students
 5. general science classes have like 50 students, English classes have like 20 so it’s not that bad.
 6. Not too hard to maintain a 3.5 GPA (the trick is to get a 4.0 the first year when the classes are a little easier)
 7. Don’t have to do research to get into medical school (i’ve been in advanced science research for three years and i absolutely HATE it)
 8. As far as DO schools go, NYCOM is among the older and one of the best established ones, meaning students from there place into all different residencies. (i know of one orthopedic surgeon, one radiologist, and 2 GP’s)
 9. and most importantly…PEACE OF MIND!!!

cons:

 1. in general classes not all the student are on par with bs/do students so you never know who you’ll be stuck with in lab
 2. not very prestigious (i personally don’t care about prestige- i am second in my class and while my classmates are looking forward to schools like Cornell and Columbia i’m just going to take the much easier route that gets the same results- why make life hard when it doesn’t have to be? )

(got all my info from students who have already gone through the program or are already in it)

Hey if you were accepted, do you mind putting up your stats and when you applied?

I’m in a BS/MD myself, but I do have a good friend who attends the BS/DO program with NYIT. He loves it so far. As far as his stats go, he was in the top 15 of our class and had a very high unweighted GPA and pretty good SAT scores. However, n=1, so it obviously doesn’t reflect opinions on the program in general.

I was accepted, and I applied around the end of December.
My stats:
2120 SAT Score (1450 M and CR)
4.44 W GPA
7 AP classes
EC’s: President/Founder of UNICEF Club, tutoring, national math honor society, vp science club, varsity tennis

I applied in mid October, heard back first week of December.
SAT: 2170 (1440 M+CR)
11 AP’s
2nd class rank (GPA 4.0 out of 4.0 (my school does it oddly))
doctor shadowing , hospital volunteering, SADD, H4H, 6 honor societies (position in 2), math team, sci club, GSA, an assortment of science, math, and art competitions, and tutoring in math and science.

@werdahalam, your stats are much more impressive than mine. I didn’t even have any medically related EC’s. Did you apply/get in to any BS/MD programs?

and, you say that the NYIT 7 year is a great program. How did your friends like the undergrad portion? I think the reason people drop out of this program is because they are accepted despite the fact that they are not qualified. People with less than 1800 sat scores get accepted; this means that some cannot handle the workload, some are simply not dedicated to becoming a doctor. Anyways, how did your friends feel about the program as a whole?

I applied to two BS MD programs that I liked, Stony Brook and SLU. I got into SLU but as of now NYIT is cheaper, and close to home. SBU doesn’t respond until the end of March but I think I’m going to NYIT’s program.

Hope to see you there (that is if I do end up going there)!

I was accepted into NYCOM 7 year DO program in November with max scolarship. Was rejected by Hofstra 8 year program but accepted into their 4 year honor program with max scholorship. My first choice was Hofstra.

My stats are sat CR 660 Math 670 writing 700 97 average in HSchool with 11 ap classes and much extra outside clubs etc. Is Hofstras program better? Do they take less students. If anyone has any info please advise. Should I go 4 years hofstra under grad and try again??

Thanks

Can I get a link to the BS/DO page on NJIT? I can’t seem to find it…

This is the NYIT BS/DO program thread. NJIT doesn’t have one; they do have a BS/MD program though. And also a BS/MD with a Caribbean school. But not BS/DO, as far as I know. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

this is really late and you’ve probably decided already but go where you’re happy flukas, not what’s harder to get into. I got into Cornell and am going to NYIT’s BS/DO instead. I believe that if you want to passionately be a doctor, you’ll succeed either way.

is this bs/do prgm really that good, i got accepted but im still thinking if i should just do premed at a better university and then go to medical school, because nyit doesn’t have a good reputation. I just wanted to know your opinions on why you choose nyit’s bs/do prgm.
Thanks

Thanks werland. I sent my deposit to nyit. Im going…Met with Dr. Runco. She is in charge of Bs/do Program. She was fantastic.
