This year (2012) I attended the NYLC (National Young Leaders Conference) and now I'm planning to put this on my college application as an EC. I know that this won't have any major influence on getting admitted, but my question is will it actually hinder my chances of getting in? The reason I'm wondering this is because I've seen many people on CC say that colleges look at NYLC as meaning your parents have a lot of money and will make them more likely to reject you.

The reason why I want to put this on my college application is because I don't have many EC's to begin with. So am I better off not putting this on my college app?

Yea, so I got offered that conference as well, and my counselor put it very well. She called them “vanity programs”, intended for the wealthy. They scrape the surface, and simply ask for money when it’s all said and done. When I read through the packet, it told me “You have been honored as the only Sophomore from (my HighSchool) to be selected for this conference”. Sounded pretty good to me, but when I researched it more thoroughly I found out that at least 4 others guys in my grade got the same thing. They just want money, really. I say, if your E.C’s are decently strong already, ditch it. If you really have nothing else as an Extracurricular, you might consider keeping it on there.
