okay .. i just received this letter today commemorating my academic achievements and leadership skills .. can a past NYLC member tell me more about NYLC and what this means to colleges?</p>
<p>I got a letter like that also, but my GC told me not to go since it asks for money.</p>
<p>is this something that every student gets w/ 3.5-4gpa?</p>
<p>It does ask for money (a large amount) but I attended NYLC last year and it was the most amazing experience of my life. If you like government or political science, I highly encourage you to attend. The entire week was wonderful...the activities, sightseeing, speakers...everything. You spend an entire day at the capital with extra access and have appointments with all of your representatives . . . </p>

<p>Summer programs, such as NYLC, are generally scams if they require some exorbitant amount of money, and on top of it, they usually don't benefit your resume in any way. Nonetheless, I'll admit that I did attend NYLC, and though I did enjoy the experience (more so for the social environment rather than the educational value), it in no way helped me out on my application. Better uses of your summer time would be getting a job, or doing Boys State or Governors School or any other program which is free or offered by the state.</p>
<p>I received the same letter and didn't attend (due to the cost) but I had a friend that did go and said, like megny, that it was amazing. She's really interested in medicine and said the stuff they did was incredible- fyi she's now a freshman at Emory.</p>
