NYT article about Computer Science at U Washington

Perhaps NYT writers are decades behind everyone else in recognizing the UW CS is good?

The article does hint that the department is undersized relative to demand, though. It is commonly discussed on these forums that actually getting into the CS major at UW is extremely difficult.

The implication in this article is that UW’s CS department is underrated…by who? Definitely not by recruiters. Definitely not by anyone knowledgeable about CS. Definitely not by potential CS students. Pretty much everyone that should know about UW knows about UW.

Maybe I’m just biased because I’m interning at Microsoft and see UW students everywhere.

“I’m interning at Microsoft and see UW students everywhere”

Gee - think there’s a reason?

Because UDub has a top computer science department?

Bill Gates once told UIUC students that Microsoft hired the most computer science grads there. I suppose that’s because UIUC has a top computer science department?

“In the most recent rankings by U.S. News & World Report, the graduate program placed seventh in the nation, right behind Cornell and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.”

It’s only news to NYT. UDub’s CS is ranked consistently 6th or 7th by USNWR for many years. NRC ranked UDub’s CS 9th back in 1995.

It’s very consistent with their east coast-centric viewpoint. Surprise that something could be that good somewhere else and pride that “they discovered” it!
