Nytimes article - Discussion about Michigan going Private

Michigan was mentioned in a recent New York Times article about Public Universities...

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/education/edlife/01public-t.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=education%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/01/education/edlife/01public-t.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=education</a></p>

On the second page it talks quite a lot about Michigan. One quote from the article is....

"Earlier this year, state lawmakers studied the idea of taking privatization to the next level, by eliminating annual state funding. The university remains public, for now."

I thought the President of University of Michigan denied this happened....of course she may not have been part of this discussion so I'm certainly not saying she lied. I'm just curious which lawmakers talked about eliminating all state funding for Michigan? Why didn't they succeed? I haven't read anything anywhere of what actually happened with this discussion of Michigan going private in the state legislature. Anybody, know any more about this.

Awesome article. Jack, do you honestly believe that the University’s president is going to come out and publically say that in 5 or 10 years, through a series of phased steps, the University is going to privatize? This said, it would seem that more and more, Michigan is headed down the path of privatization. But the road will be long and by no means certain.

“The University of Michigan belongs to an enviable class of nationally prestigious public universities; many of its undergraduates picked it over the Ivy League.”

That pretty much sums up Michigan.

“Thirty years ago, the university began going through the convulsions other public universities are now experiencing. Today, it is largely protected from Michigan’s plummeting economy. Only 7 percent of its budget is provided by the state.”

Thankfully, Michigan was able to outpace all universities in the development of its endowment. In 1988, Michigan’s endowment was not even among the 25 largest. Today, it is the 6th largest in the nation, greater than all other university endowment save those of HYPSM.

Michigan is not going to privatize.

hmm…no,

however it is so obvious that a discussion at pretty high levels on the matter took place that it is kinda absurd to deny that a significant discussion happened. It may not have been a discussion that Coleman was involved with.

Any info out there about the details of the discussion that actually took place… newspaper articles, rumors. Just think it would be interesting.
