Hey everyone. I am a junior at New York University and I just wanted to leave a post for everyone considering NYU and tell them that it is in my opinion the best school in the nation. I used to go on college confidential when I was applying to colleges and I never thought that I would get into NYU, but now that I am here it is my dream school. The point of this post is that if anyone has questions about NYU whether it be admissions, dorm choices, campus involvement, college experience, or anything else I would be happy to answer them. NYU will give you a college experience unlike any other school in the nation and for all of you who are applying and fortunate enough to get in, you are going to have the time of your lives.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL

My main concern about NYU is the financial aid. I need a lot of aid. How much was your need, and how much was covered (and what percentage of this was loans)? How generous are merit awards, and how good does one have to be to receive one?

What do you think about my chances at stern ED? thanks

My SAT is very low but do you think my extra stuff could make up for it?
Also, how important are the four short answer questions NYU asks on its application for Stern applicants?

thanks.

I'm concerned about the statistics for Stern...
It says on the website, the average GPA was about 3.74 and SAT score was around 1430. This seems a bit low for Stern, which is one of the best and more respected programs in the country. I know many people who applied with a 4.0 and 1500+ SATs but didn't get in. So, if you could find or if you know, please tell me what Stern's looking for, b/c right now I'm a bit confused.

Hey,

I already applied E.D. to Gallatin. How is that school? I am going to their Nov 4th information session but i am sure you could tell me more about the school than them.

Is it relatively easier to get in (compare to CAS/STERN and others)

how many courses at other schools are available to the Gallatin students. most of them? 90%?

lastly...hm...don't have one but just tell me any interesting thing about it! thank you!

I am going to be completely honest, NYU financial aid sucks. Not because they don't have the money to give, but because they receive so many applications each and every year that they can afford to turn down kids that can't pay. That said the approximate cost of going to NYU is right about 40,000 a year. This year I received 26,000 in financial aid. 18,000 in scholarship and the rest in loans. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER is that NYU consistently increaces the amount of aid that one receives if they perform well at NYU. Your first year will be tough if you need a lot of aid but the following years are better. My advice is to become an RA because they get free housing which runs around 11,000 a year and you don't have to do too much. If at all possible however, take the loan hit because the experience here is amazing!

First of all let me say that Stern pretty much rules NYU. It is without a doubt the most compettitive school here and the curve is pretty cut throat. That said some of the things that the stern kids get to do like internships and conferences sound amazing. Stern is also a top 10 national business school and NY comapnies love NYU kids.
That said your stats are pretty good. I would say you definitely are in the running IF you apply ED. If you don't there are just too many kids. As for your SAT score the lowest Stern SAT score I have heard of was a 1350 so I would really concentrate on writing a killer essay. NYU puts a lot of emphasis on the essay and that could be what puts you over the top. Your extra curriculars are good but make sure that you apply ED.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

The NYU admissions process is probably the most confusing in the country. To be completely honest I have friends with 4.0's and 1500's that didn't get in. NYU admits the individual not the gpa. If you have stellar grades but no EC's and no community service, odds are your not getting in. So much of NYU is about networking and that goes double for STERN. At STERN you make contacts that last your entire life and if the admission people don't feel like you have the people skills to form these contacts your not getting in. That said the average gpa from STERN concensus is around a 3.85 unweighted. Most people I know were in the 3.9-4.0 range. The reason why it is lower is because a lot of the time ED applicants have lower gpa's but are accepted. It is pretty much common knowledge here also that 1350 or below on the SAT is devastating to your chances for getting in. Stern should have at LEAST a 1400+ but most score well above that.
Hope that helped and good luck

The pecking order of schools at NYU is 1. STERN 2. CAS 3 Tisch and Gallatin comes in around 4th or maybe 5th. Gallatin is all what you make of it. If you visit the bookstore when you come check out the books that the professors use, they are amazing. Gallatin professors make the material come to life more than any other school's professors at NYU.
Admission into gallatin is easier compared to STERN and CAS as well but don't plan on transferring into either. Once your in Gallatin your pretty much in there for good. A gpa around 3.7 and 1350+ SAT's will make you a compettitive applicant. The essay for gallatin however is more important than any other school as is your planned concentration. Gallatin students also typically form their own group within NYU. They are probably the closest school in the sense that everyone knows each other and works with each other. STERN is the worst in that sense because of the competition.
Hope that Helped and if you need more just ask.
GOOD LUCK!

I'm a sophomore at Drew University, a top 60 LAC. Last semester I only had about a 3.4, but this semester I am taking 20 credits of competitive courses and hope to raise my GPA. I also write for the school paper and may be getting a journalism internship next summer. I got into the GSP in HS. What are my chances for next fall? Thanks!

askaboutNYU -

I am a junior in high school, and am seriously considering applying to this school as one of my top choices. Unfortunately, i have been unable to "visit" thus far, although i have been to NYC many times. Everything i have heard about life at NYU has been favorable (I actually have a cousin who transferred to NYU from Tulane, but haven't had much time to talk to him about the school).

What exactly do you like about NYU?

The city? The classes? The professors? The kids? The employment opportunities?

Specifics would be great! Thanks a lot!

The Journalism program at NYU is pretty compettitive and there are some unbelievable internships available to you. That said gpa and essays are very important. If your last semester was rough make sure you get a great gpa this semester and explain in your essay if there was any reason why you performed the way that you did. Transferring from a good university will most likely help your cause but your gpa is the number one factor.
Good Luck

This is a hard question because to be completely honest there are very few things that I don't like about NYU. First of all if you are wondering how the dorms are let me tell you that they are amazing. I live with 2 people in a 2 bedroom apartment with two bathrooms on the 26th floor of a building that overlooks the Brooklyn bridge. My view is amazing and the area around the seaport is beautiful as well. I am a biology/anthropology double major and my professors are amazing. NYU is pumping 2.8 billion dollars into CAS over the next 6 years and after they are done I honestly believe that NYU will be a top 10 school. Stern and Tisch already are but CAS is moving up fast. Socially I have not done the same thing twice since I began school here. I am not big on Broadway but have seen some shows, but you can go to Times Square or to the 1000's of clubs all around NYU. There are so many things to do it really just depends on you.
Good Luck!

My essay for colleges are basically being a stutter with speech disability, i have overcome myself to do things that most people can do (including speeches being president) that i may have a disability but i am not handicapped.

i am really stressing out whether i can get into NYU Stern..
I know i have a low SAT verbal score..but ive been told that grade wise, ec wise, im at an ok spot..plus im taking the TOEFL test since my native language isnt English.
please feel free to leave any comments!
thank you.

Your grades and ec's are very good and right in the NYU range. Your SAT score however is below the NYU average and even farther below the NYU Stern average. If NYU is your dream school I would highly advise taking the SAT again because below a 1300 really limits your chances at Stern. If your not really worried about getting in then don't take them again and give it a shot.
Good Luck

thanks for the reply.
i just wanted to ask u one more question =)
i know stern is probably the hardest school to get in at nyu,
but if i apply to CAS instead of stern, does that make my chance to get accepted a little higher?
stat from princetonreview shows that NYU has an average SAT of 1210-1410. i know for most colleges, the lower 25% percentile of the students are on sports scholarship, but since NYU doesnt offer any, do most of the lower 25% percentile of people go to CAS?
im askin because i have to decide whether im goin to apply to CAS or stern.
thank you for helping!

oh and also same question asked for CAS on SCPS too..
im not really sure wut i want to do but it seems like engineering, business, management, etc.
so im actually thinking of scps too..
thanks!

HWI,

SCPS is an adult ed. school. I used to work in the admissions dept. at NYU, the hardest schools to get into seem to be CAS and Stern, and School of Ed. is a bit easier.

Good luck.
