Will doing 20 ch semesters look good on an application?

I am planning on applying in about mid February to mid march

I applied for Spring 08 semester, as a philosophy major in CAS.

I don’t know my high school grades off the top of my head, but they were very polar (e.g. when I enjoyed a class I have a 95+, when I did not, they were in the 70s). But, on the plus side, it was a rather prestigious boarding school.

My SAT was 1310, 670 V, 640 M (I took them before the change to the new SATs)
MY gpa is 3.64
I have an amazing recommendation
I have a 3.9 on my midterms.
My essays were very good. I spent a lot of time on them.

I will be applying as a Junior starting this spring term (I’m slightly off as I took medical leave).

I took a 19 credit term, 16 credit term, 9 credits over the summer, and 18 this term.

I have not taken any “filler” courses. They have all been for my major or minors. All my courses are either Anthro, Psych, English, Philosophy, or History.

I am in the honors program, took 6 (or 7) honors courses.
My only real EC is writing for the Honors Newsletter.

Any opinions on how this looks for me?

I’m mainly worried about my GPA being slightly low, and my relatively low SAT scores.

a 3.64 is low? haha then i have quite a bit to worry about for the fall 2008 transfer. just out of curiosity, does anyone know how important recommendations are? i have two good ones from high school but since i’m a freshmen and by the time the fall transfer date comes around i will only have had 1.5 semesters…i dont think i have too many options from professors. most of my classes are big lectures so the chance for a personal relationship with professors isn’t great. i think i could probably get one recommendation from my french professor because that’s a small class but is 1 really enough?

ya i also have questions about recs. Do most professors at our current colleges want to write a rec for transfer. Wouldn’t a prof. that we are friendly with want us to stay at their college?

I think the college will understand that you are applying as a freshmen and may not have a relationship with many of your teachers. So as long as your high school recommendations are strong, I wouldn’t worry about it. :]

icarus772: difficult to say primarily because of that gpa. 4.0s get rejected for transfer. cas philo doesn’t have nearly as much competition as cas eco per say so that’s why i’m not saying no. the strength of your curriculum (honors) and the number of creds you are taking can outweigh it though. Nonetheless, it is the largest determining factor in your app.

sats are right in the 50% range.

hs gpa will play a role.

Your average stats will leave your essays+qs to do much of the decision-making; neither of which I have; a more definite answer is not possible.

In addition, the lack of info regarding cas philo admissions will have everybody you ask relying on assumptions and speculation.

I am super nervous to get my letter. Does anyone know when we find out? I know it says mid-November but is it true that NYU admissions said it was around early December? if anyone finds out/gets a letter, please post!

im trying to decide between BU and NYU for fall '08. NYU would be my top choice because i really want to be in new york city. im eventually hoping to get into advertising and even though BU isnt ranked as high overall i know they have an amazing advertising program. NYU’s definitely isnt as renowned but i don’t think graduating with a degree from NYU will ever hurt…my main concern is ive heard that nyu can be pretty lonely as a transfer. other than freshmen housing it seems like all the housing would be pretty anti-social because ppl have their established friends that theyre already living with, etc. anyone else worried about this problem? i would love to be in new york city but the social aspect of college is definitely important to me also.

hi guys…ive posted here before but i just want to know my chances again…im studying at UF…gpa 3.75-3.80…honors program…deans honor roll…several extra creds…sat score of 1300…but im an international student…so verbal doesnt count much for me at all…i went to an extremely prestigious high school…excellent recs and extra currics…my IB score in high school was 33 on 42…so what are my chances at stern?

hey so in the transfer forum some people actually get emails about their admissions decisions… does NYU do that?? or do you just have to wait for the mail to physically arrive…

nrochs- im concerned about that issue as well. i have a few friends who go to nyu and they said even as freshman it is/it was hard to make friends. one of the girls who told me this is extremely gregarious so that kind of had me worried. if someone that social, friendly, and fun was having trouble meeting people then it must really be difficult. everyone just says that you have to make a lot of effort to get to know ppl. that is true in every transfer situation i think, but maybe even more so for NYU.

im not sure if NYU does this, but a lot of schools have transfers come to campus early like the freshman so they can participate in orientation and have a chance to meet ppl before classes start. anyone know if NYU does this? they accept like what around 1500 transfer? so there must be a lot of ppl in the same boat.

so right now i am at Penn State on the main campus and im a freshman applying for fall 2008 transfer (CAS if i can get in)

HS:
3.8 GPA at a very distinguised high school
SAT: 600 Reading, 640 Math, 710 Writing
SATII: 640 Chem, 640 French, 620 Math Level 1
a decent amount of EC’s (a capella choir, horseback competition, french tutor, volunteering etc)
AP’s: Chemistry-4, Biology-4, Calc AB-3, French-3, English Lit-3

College GPA: 3.85 (with a late drop in one class with a passing grade) 14 credits

how do i stack up against other cas fall transfers? i was also thinking about Steinhardt because im interested in communications. is it possible to get accepted to one school and if you decide to change your major, switch to another school later in the year?

no i havent before. i found out quickly that the whole college town thing wasnt working for me, so to the big city it is! (i hope) i think im going to apply to steinhardt. is it way easier to get in there that it is to get into cas?
