Look me up on facebook at what I told you about! What school/program did you get into?

what’s the consensus on nyu’s linguistics department? received my acceptance letter the other day along with bard’s acceptance letter. still waiting on a few more schools. it’s december and i still have no idea what’s in store for the spring.

currently at community college in ny looking to apply to stern for fall 08

have a 3.9 have taken accounting, calc 1,micro,macro, eng 1, oral communications and other liberal arts classes and next semester taking
bio,chem,acct 2, eng 2

college gpa 3.88 - mostly likely going up or staying the same by end of spring semester

hs average 90
sat 1100/1600

chances please???

anymore decisions yet??

I know someone who transferred into NYU tisch school for hotel management with a 3.2 GPA from not a spectacular school either..is this program a hoax or not counted in as transferring to NYU?

Uhhh…Tisch is an Arts school that is very hard to get into in the first place, and even harder to transfer into.

hotel management is located in the school of continuing and professional studies, one of the more easier schools to gain admission into of nyu. tisch is the school of the arts (popular majors include film and television/dramatic writing/dance/producing). and i wouldn’t particularly say ‘it’s even harder to transfer into’ when compared to freshman admission. it’s probably equal in terms of their selection process.

biggyboy is right.

jt872487: good gpa but stern places a heavy emphasis on those SATs and general numerical data. If you retake and got a 1300+ I’d say you have a good shot if your hs gpa is above a 3.5.

cupofjoeplease21: congrats! i haven’t heard much about nyu’s linguistics specifically, but it’s under CAS which is nyu’s “main” branch and thus has a good rep.

1cekream: focus on a major. meh college gpa, 45% on the SATs, no major, hard to say. if you said economics, i’d doubt, but if you say philosophy i’d say you have an ok shot. major counts.

i agree. i do think the major you list at CAS may count. for example, most people who apply as economics majors do so only because they feel stern will be too selective on them. now, say you picked something like sociology, it’ll probably serve as an advantage to you because there are really very little soc majors here. once you’re in, it’s very easy to change majors within CAS. subsequently, you could follow an economics path, perhaps integrating pre-business studies.

and that’s another thing. many people do not realize you may minor in Pre-Businss if you are a student in either tisch/cas/steinhardt. you take several stern business core classes such as marketing/statistics/accounting. nice perk to have to teach you the basics.

Thanks for the reply Jay. So are you saying that if I am an undecided student, it will be hard for me to get in? And what do you mean by 45% on the SAT’s?

Oh 1 more thing. What happens if I want to apply as a physics major?

Would this hinder my chances? From what I know, NYU is not really famous for this subject class.

THANKS!!

I dunno, biggy. I think all of the schools have lower acceptance rates for transfer admission. I have always heard Tisch is the worst. In the first place, their acceptance rate is much lower than the rest of the schools. I know that for sure.

hey guys, just another question about all this major talk.

how is NYU’s (CAS) history department? does applying as a history/soci major help your chances more so than applying as a econ major does? Thanks!

hey nyu mails out decisions in end of may, does that mean they check your spring semester scores?

^^nope, they dont ask for midterm grade reports…but i would send them if you are doing well up to that point.

mandela, the econ is probably the toughest CAS major at NYU to get into…they are really selective…so i would say the history/soci program is alot easier to get into that the econ program

whats the maximum number of credits NYU accepts

1 year madd

60 credits is the max for all schools

Sorry, im not sure what a midterm grades are? Do you just go and ask your college professors for one? I figured since the spring semester grades comes out a couple of weeks before the decision, they might have taken a look at it.

Also, if you get rejected one time around, can you apply for the next semester or do you have to wait a full year?

and finally, is there a way i can appeal a rejection?

edit: one more question, how hard is it to get in to the political science major?

i think some people here are misinterpreting what i said. the major you should select within CAS is one that fits you best, and the ability for you to convey this in your apps. selecting ‘history’ or ‘political science’ will have little effect on your admission, if any at all. but economics can be tricky.
