NYU 2008 Transfer

im not saying that i would pick a major just because it is easier to get into. i was only asking about the reputation of the history and soci major in terms of selectivity bc, as we can see, econ does (well, according to the ppl on this site) have a reputation that may or may not effect if ppl get in. i would never arbitrarily declare a major just to get into a school. it would seem logical to think that bc a major (econ) exists within CAS that is “more selective”, it would be possible that others did too. i was just wondering where hist and soci stand. thats all!

you apply to the school, not the major. i don’t know what school can teach history better…it’s history.

^^ no, You apply to the school, then the major also reviews the app

I graduated high school with a 59(or like a .8 gpa), and even in college, I went up in grades every single semester (2.7, 3.0, 3.4, 3.5). Hopefully I can get at least a 3.4 before I apply. Maybe after spring 08 semester, i might have a 3.6 but I doubt NYU is gonna see that.

Do you think the extremely low high school gpa + low beginning college gpa + consistant upwards trend could actually help me in my admissions?

I really dont have a medical excuse or anything, or even any ECs for that matter, and I didnt take work seriously, and now Im actually trying, and most importantly, I started taking responsibility for myself. Not sure what to write in my essays, but Im applying to CAS for politics.

Im sure its still a pretty big reach for me.

^^im guessing your at a CC…right??

you will def have to stay 2 years and do well to show (not tell) how much you have changed since HS.

In your essays i would def stress growth and how NYU will bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. Something along those lines
Good luck

^^^ Thanks for the response

I am actually at CUNY Baruch, and I have no idea how I got admitted in the first place.

Also, do I have to wait 1 whole year to apply again if I get rejected from applying to CAS?

and i really hope nyu gets to see my spring semester grades, but I think the decisions are mailed in about a week before my spring grades come out. Do they have an appeal program or anything?

hm i’m not sure how you were admitted to baruch either, from what i understand it’s the most selective cuny school. nyu doesn’t have an admissions appeal process from what i’ve heard either. i don’t know why you want to transfer to be honest, i think you’re at a pretty decent place right now and i knew people who 80 averages and decent SATs who weren’t admitted to baruch. feel privileged lol. the political science department there must be pretty decent, the school isn’t just known for their business programs. good luck.

^^ Well the main reason I want to transfer is because of the 3 hour commute just to get there.

I also want to go to law school (preferebly NYU) so I would want to get a feel for it.

Plus ive been to NYU a couple of times at my friends dorm and I love it there.

There is no official appeal process @ NYU.

I can’t speak much of Baruch as a whole+student body, but I personally know of some kids with 2.8s and 1200/1600s that got in.

k1man: you know you can use the quote function instead of using ^^.

sorry, im quite new to the whole forum thing. still not sure how quote

are you sure about the 2.8s? i thought that was extremely low for nyu.

personally I kinda like it here, and I shouldnt take it for granted.

but 90% of the people here are either deadbeat accountant majors planning to become accountants,

and the other 10% are people who are going to transfer and only came here for the first 2 years to save money and because it is a good CUNY, before transferring out.

Unfortunatly, I dont fit in either catagory and I really like it in NYU + I hate the commuting, so il probably apply there with like a 3.4

this is my last semester in CUNY Baruch. i’ve been there since fall 06, so 3 full semesters. i had a 3.35 when i applied as a transfer to NYU gallatin and i got my acceptance letter nov 23rd.

i dont know about 2.8s but i got in with my gpa and a 1320/1600 and 1850/2400.

i strongly feel as if my college essay and on my strong teacher rec did it for me.

Well you do have good SATs.

I also failed 2 classes btw, in which I made them up by retaking it, so the F doesnt show.

Im not sure how badly that will play a role in my admissions.

I think I have around a 1160/1600 and 1660/2400 on my SATs.

And im not really sure how an AWFUL highschool gpa will play a role in my admissions also

k1man, the F isn’t averaged, but it will appear on your transcript. the setup you were referring to is mainly for students who will stick out baruch until graduation and won’t need to report a low gpa on their resume since they retook the class. but if you plan on transferring, or applying to grad/professional schools, those Fs will certainly appear on your records though they are not calculated into the final gpa.

if you want to transfer into nyu, consider gallatin or the school of continuing and professional studies, and even those are reaches. CAS will definitely reject you. sorry about the brutal honesty.

high school gpa isn’t accounted for as much when transferring as a junior. however, keep in mind that you will still need to send them your hs material, and this will give them a better picture of who you are. you didn’t seem to redeem yourself in colege in terms of gpa, so it will not look pretty on an application.

edit: if you don’t mind the school but hate the commute, wouldn’t it be feasible getting an apartment in the city? that area of manhattan is pretty nice and you can do so with friends, since many people feel like you i’m sure. nyu doesn’t guarantee housing for transfer students, and you are especially unlikely to receive any housing if you live in ny. transfers also get some of the nastiest dorms, just fyi.

^^ haha thanks, im in need of harsh criticisms anyway.

I read the nyu forums and they said they sometimes dont look at the spring semester grades, depending on when they see your application and mail your decision.

I can possibly raise my cummalative gpa to a 3.6 or 3.7 after spring, which would usually be enough, but my 2 F’s might prevent it. Thats only if I get lucky for them to even look at my spring term.

I guess ill have to try my best this, winter, and spring term and hope for the best.

I am thinking about applying/auditioning at Steinhardt

I am currently at Tulane Univ with a 3.82+gpa

high school stats:
1860 SAT (570R/600M/690W)
GPA: 3.7UW/3.96W

i just finished my first semester of college and feel i might’ve made the wrong decision by turning down NYU. if i were to apply as a transfer after being previously being accepted, would my chances of getting in be higher? would it be possible to regain the scholarships they gave me when i was accepted? lol..

moonwave89: The fact that you were originally admitted is a good sign. Explain your reasons for originally turning down NYU and how you now realize it was a bad idea because NYU was a better fit, etc (you can say you recieved more aid somewhere else) and if you did that correctly, it shouldn’t be a negative factor. no idea about the scholarship.

Hi everybody!
I was considering transferring to NYU for the fall 2008 term. I was wondering if NYU considered new SAT/ACT test scores.
I also heard that there will only be 100 transfer slots this year with an average gpa with at least a 3.7. Is this true?

in my transfer letter it said that of course my matriculation is dependent on satisfactory completion of all courses and grades this semester.

has anyone heard of anyone getting denied entry because they did poorly after getting accepted?s

seansukbol:

No.

Where did you hear that from??

1,702 to 100 in 1 year? No.

No statistic illustrates/proves this, but a 3.6 is the average gpa for freshman entry so one can safely assume that the gpa avg for transfers would be slightly higher

congrats on getting accepted. haven’t heard of someone getting denied bc of performance after getting accepted, but i have heard of academic probation. just continue performing as you are now and everything should be fine.
