Hey Guys.

Anyone thinking about applying for 2009 spring semester?

I might, but I heard they give out horrible aid to transfers and I cannot afford a private school without a lot of aid money. I'm visiting Cornell in August and will also be going to NYC, so I will check out the school while I am there and make up my mind if it would be a good fit then.

I am thinking about it too. But 1) I don't know if I could get in and 2) I don't know what the aid would be like. However, I currently pay an obscene amount at a school I'm not overly thrilled with so, I'll probably end up applying to NYU and some other schools. I'll just cross my fingers and hope really hard.

Yeah I heard they give horrible aid too!

Well lets post stats and get ready for our miserable and nerve-racking trip lol

I'm just finished my first semester at a CC in California and by the end of the summer I should have 64 units not including 6 AP tests.

--I have a 3.73 GPA in 64 units
--3 Rec. letters from my internship employer, econ professor, and senate president
--Hopefully Good Essays
--In Student Government, Appropriations Committe, Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Beta Lambda, Economics Club, Deans List, President's Honors List.
--I have an upward trend (3.0 first semester and 4.0 for spring and summer)
--I'm Nicaraguan

High School:
3.5 GPA with all honors courses :[
1790 SAT ::::[[[[
Applied to NYU previously and got denied

What do you guys think? I think I have about a 5-10% chance. Competition is insane these days. THis is my dream school :[

P.S. Applying to CAS

I went to a big CC that is in a transition to become a 4 year and just shaved community out of its name like 3 days ago lol. Anyways got my AA in spring with 65 cred hours and a 3.93 although calculated gpa should be 4.0 since my non A's were a class I took in highschool b+ that will not transfer and a credit by examination b. Taking 2 more classes in fall that I need for Cornell (top choice) and would give a 3.94 and 71 credits but 12 non transferable from high school. Also took challenging course loads.

EC's... medium scale reptile breeder (time consuming, in fact just had 7 of the 21 eggs I am incubating hatch today and am expecting a lot more eggs very soon from other species), academic senator, habitat for humanity, trading stocks

awards, etc..phi theta kappa, honors program, deans list every semester and a year ahead of hs graduating class not that it would matter

work experience...fast food 6 months and auto upholstery 8 months during high school. 1 1/2 years at the family business working the counter, and now a few months at my internship for an accounting firm that I am doing very well at and anticipate being at until I leave for another school (he said I can stay as long as I want plus the pay is pretty good). Averaged more than 20 hrs a week at every job (35 at current), been working since 16.

Rec letters are no problem, will get excellent from econ professor (had for 2 semesters and still talk with very regularly), plus the boss at my CPA firm internship and the president of the college I go to for being a senator. Can get another from a different professor no problem, just not sure who I will go with yet.

Hopefully my essays will be good. They will have the hell proofed out of them before I send any in to any places I apply.

HS had a 3.2 UW 3.7 or so weighted, and didn't take many weighted classes until senior year (had like a 3.0W prior senior year in which I had a 4.5W). Never took SAT though, but reading NYU's transfer FAQ's it shouldn't be required with the amount of credits I have, I just hope it doesn't hurt my chances if I do decide to apply.

Would be applying to CAS economics although I would rather study ILR at Cornell (prefer both the program and the university and not just because I don't want massive debt).

yeah you have a good shot at both colleges...you have great stats! what college did you go to?

Yeah i might but i will be a freshman at a CC, anybody know what kind of classes i should take, like honors or not, and if NYU has requirements like a foreign language. last thing, does NYU consider your high school transcript if you have completed 32 units?

NYU got insane acceptance rate this year, only 10%...

Love3qualsHate, I go to santa fe college in florida. It is basically just a big community college that is being converted, but will still mostly give out AA degrees. I got accepted to the only school I applied to for fall (university of florida), but changed my mind and don't want to go anymore. I'm taking 2-3 classes next semester to finish up recommended transfer courses for cornell ilr.

Lakersinjune:
NYU considers the HS transcripts until you get 60 units or so, and even then they weigh some importance on it (as well as SATs). I heard it was so competitive at some schools like Stern that they had to weigh even more importance on HS achievments because so many people were qualified. It's really difficult to get in.

I'd say try to get a 4.0 for every semester that you are there and apply after 32 units and if you don't get accepted just apply when you have 60. Follow some of the classes they recommend such as Expository Writing and make sure you get involved in school (I messed up my first semester and I'm paying for it now :/) If you haven't taken SATs take them your first year of college and try to get at close to 1350/1600 as possible at least. From what i've seen people with those stats usually get accepted.

10% for transfers? Serious? UGHH

hello guys, i am a successful transfer to NYU from Stony brook. I can tell you that NYU DOES not GIVE OUT HORRIBLE AID. they just generally give out to the most needy. they are also plenty of scholarships and work study jobs available. in fact almost all NYU jobs for students appear to be for work study or grad students. you should all call NYU or ask them by e-mail or the Admissions Bulletin board about these financial aid. admittedly stern students get the best aid with their stern scholarship. still you should apply for NYU if you wish to attend and then look at financial aid later. you guys shouldnt believe these myths even they are true in the past (it doesnt mean the future is the same as the past).

despite a low acceptance rate, i got in with 3.28. so go for it! you may never know. GPA is important but when they say holistic, they mean it.

you may want to tour around NYU to make sure it is a good fit for you. also you should check the NYU Transfer 2008 thread all the way at the end for the last transfer group. many were successful this year, including me. my full stats are in it if you want to see it.

good luck to all spring transfer applicants.

To lastheadline,
OMG...Thank you so much for clearing my misunderstandings...I'll search the old NYU 2008 thread.
But the acceptance rate is pretty low this year, isn't it? Maybe NYU confused itself with Columbia?
btw, I think campus visit will be quite helpful to see if it is a good fit for oneself. But I think it's also sweet if you can know someone in NYU so that it'll be easier to acquaint with NYU.

hey, guys. i have a question

what if i haven't taken SATs before. And I am now in my second yr of college, w/ about 30+ units. I think I'll transfer as a junior, which means more than 60 semester units. Can I do that w/o SATs????

thx!

Oh wow. Ten percent. Ten percent makes me puke a little in my mouth. I don't really think I'll get in, but it's worth a shot.

I'm uber worried about the whole letter of recommendation deal. I have one professor that I know pretty well, but otherwise I failed massively.

I'm a psych major and I currently have a 3.8 GPA. I made Dean's list and all that fun stuff. I did a bazillion activities in HS but I sort of relaxed on them during my first year of college. I was in a wildlife conservation club and a psychology undergraduate council. I have a research assistant job for next semester and I'm hoping to get a job at the Starbucks on campus.

This summer I work at the same Subway I worked at in HS, have an internship at the local psych center, and foster kittens for a local humane society.

In HS my gpa was 102/100. My SAT was a 2080. I took Chem, US History and Literature subject test and scored 670, 750, and 700 respectively. I was valedictorian if that still matters at all, haha. I was heavily involved in music, but now I play just for fun. I didn't like how intense the music groups were in college. I feel bad about that, but music just wasn't a release anymore. Boy do I sound like an angst party :)

I have bunch of awards and stuff, but I don't know if I should really bother listing them. I have pretty good AP scores too, but again, does that really matter at this point in the game?

Just reading this post, I feel totally overwhelmed and despondent at my chances. Too many stellar people. :P
I'm applying to Steinhardt, btw.

everyone should at least go to the bulletin board for transfers once. it's always best to ask directly. if there is something specific about your application, remember to put your NYU ID that is given to you after you applied and submited the application. as always, you should thank them for their help and write in perfect english.

gogogobears, i think this answers your question: Do I have to submit SAT or ACT scores if I am applying as a transfer? - Topic Powered by eve community

kisstherain325, looks like you have jobs. you may want to talk about any good learning experiences you have with them but make sure it's really unique since if it is going to sound like someone's else it sounds generic. you should also show your interest in your selected AND the specific qualities of their program. NYU wants students that are not only good academically but also know that the NYU program best fits their goals and learning styles. you should do some research. (there is no need to talk about the program as the admissions officers already know about that, just say how it fits your goals and learning style and what they admissions officers dont know)

Thanks for the advice LastHeadline. I really appreciate it.

I've been looking at the applied psychology program's four semester fieldwork requirement, and I feel like it's this crucial part of psychology that I've been missing at my current school. I like textbook teaching and lectures, but I also feel like its even more important to learn stuff first hand. I also see that people have done research on a couple of topics I'm heavily interested in that aren't present at my current school. Also, for what my current career goals are its mighty helpful that I could minor in nutrition. I'm just not sure how to say all this in a creative way that they haven't heard a million times before.

PS. Congrats on getting in, that's awesome.

In case any of you decided to attend NYU, here's a guide: A transfer's guide to NYU - Undefined Section

Thanks LASTHEADLINE!

You're an inspiration to us all!

Hi, I am also applying to NYU CAS for spring 09. I really want to get in!

What do you think my chances are?

I am at a Manhattan Community College
Have completed 38 credits there--> GPA 3.95
total 41 because I took a class at Columbia University this summer--> GPA 3.67
Ec's: I used to train professionally in ballet so I still continue to dance
I am in a financial literacy program, so I basically teach HS kids about finance, I am a mentor to Freshman through Phi Theta Kappa, I work at a clothing store this summer, I also am a volunteer at a program that helps under privileged kids gain skills for college.

My recs will be very strong from the heads of the financial literacy program.

I am not submitting standardized testing either. However, my HS GPA was an awful 2.6

...I am a worried :-/
