NYU 2025 EDI/EDII

Hi guys. I’m a junior (rising senior I pretty soon) from East TN. I’m applying to CAS for journalism  NYU has been my dream school since I was a freshman and I’m trying to get a better idea of whether I will get in or not and which ED date I should apply for.

34 ACT
3.5 UNW GPA & 3.98 W GPA (I think) but Ive had an upward trajectory. TLDR the two things that tanked my GPA are sophomore gym © and sophomore honors trig (C+) which are completely unrelated to my major
7 APS:
Freshman- AP Hug, got a 5 on the exam but a B+ in the class
Soph- none
Junior- AP Lang, APUSH & AP State (hoping for 4s on lang & apush and a 3 in stats. I have A+ in lang and apush and ~B in stats ugh)
Senior- taking AP Lit, AP Gov & AP Art History (Going to take this online, not offered at my school)

ECS:
4 years of marching & concert band, no leadership
2 years of yearbook, editor-in-chief next year
2 years of ethics bowl, last year we set a school record & won an award for most Q&A points. might be a co-captain/captain? TBD
Part-time hostess at a restaurant since Sophomore year, work 10-15 hrs a week
*Going to start a NEHS chapter at my school next year
*Receptionist at a Dermatology office this summer (working 2 jobs)
*Accepted to NYU SPS academy for Journalism and Creative Writing- in-person classes got cancelled but I’m still doing the classes online.
*Semester long internship w/ a local newspaper through a work-based-learning program at my HS
*Volunteer Newsletter writer for local YWCA
Random volunteer work; 1 semester of tutoring for Boys & Girls club, *working with hospice patients, other random volunteer projects
(I would also love advice on which of these to leave off of my application)

PS I put stars next to all the ECs that are only senior year things bc I feel like not having many ECs as an underclassman looks kinda bad

Essays/Recs should be pretty good- I’m getting one from my Philosophy teacher and ethics bowl coach and Yearbook advisor, which should be pretty good. I’m also getting one from possibly my AP Lang teacher.

As far as essays go, for my common app essay I’m writing about Dolly Parton/being from Tennessee because I think that’s a unique angle since not many Tennessee students apply to NYU (or UCLA, BU, other schools I’m applying to).

Basically I’m just wondering if I should apply EDI to show that I’m 100% committed to NYU and just pray for a deferral or a waitlist so I can send my 1st semester Senior grades (which I’m going to make sure are all As) or EDII, which would sacrifice my EDI but allow me to submit a better GPA.

Either way I’m also wondering if I would even get in. Thanks so much sorry this was so long

I don’t have much experience with analyzing or nitpicking chance me posts, but I think you have a good application. You seem incredibly hardworking. You do music, lots of writing, and show leadership in your clubs. You work lots of jobs which show good character. As a rising senior myself, I’ve known a few people who actually got into NYU Cas, and they aren’t much different from you. Just be prepared if you don’t get accepted but apply with confidence my guy

How much financial aid do you need?

Admissions chance wise, there is not a difference between ED1 and ED2. If you think you will have a noticeably better application for ED2 then you should wait for that. (This was said in 2 different NYU admissions presentations.)

Your GPA is a little on the low side for CAS, the gym grade won’t matter, trig might. One question- it’s not clear to me from the courses you’ve listed: will you have the “best chance” transcript of 4 years each of lab science, math, and foreign language? (As well as English and social science/history which it looks like you will)

So because of the way I dropped out of the advanced math track, I won’t be able to technically take a math next year so my fourth year of math is going to be counted as physics. I hadn’t planned to take another science class on top of that.

I did end up reaching Spanish 4 level, but it took me less than four years- will that affect my chances?

probably not too much, but I thought they were need blind?

Spanish 4 will do. It’s not clear to me, what is your highest math class? At least pre-calc I presume?

They are need blind for admissions, but they do not meet full need for aid.

Also, you presumably know you have to double major if you do journalism at NYU, do you have an idea what you want your second major to be?
