Is NYU a PC or a Mac school? In other words do more students at NYU use a Mac or a PC. Because right now I want to buy a Mac laptop however I think the only huge disadvantage that I would have is that if we're doing a group project or something and we're using powerpoint (or other softwares and applications) I might not have it on there or it will be in a different form than the people in my group (who have pcs) unless those kids have Mac as well, which is why I want to know do the majority of the students there use PCs or Mac?

...and which are the rest of you considering?

NYU is a bit more PC than Mac, but there are Mac and PC labs on campus. Also, if you're using MS Office, files are completely compatible. It really makes no difference which you buy. Buy whichever you like more. :D

plus, if u want a mac, you can use boot camp which allows users to use Win on mac computers. but as shades children says, most of the academic application (word, excel, pp) are compatible so there shouldnt be a problem. if u happen to run into one, just use boot camp, and you are fine

I know when I visited, I saw mac computers set up for public use in several different places. however, i think you should get what youre comfortable with, unless your program reccomends a certain computer, and you'll be fine

ya definitely just buy one that you are more comfortable with. most of the work you do on the computer will be your own so you might as well be very comfortable with it.

merumerume: I don't see what the point of taking two computers to college is. It's one more thing to get damaged or stolen. Are you saying that you don't like using the laptop because it's uncomfortable for you? If so, don't take it - a desktop is fine. However, if it's bulky, big, or heavy, your laptop might be better - take a look at the ergonomics products that are out there and see if any of them will make you more comfortable.

Michelle, I'm coming in with my Mac (a 12" powerbook). When I visited, NYU seemed EXTREMELY Mac friendly - and Macs rock!

To everyone who is planning on getting a Mac for NYU: DON'T BUY NOW. Wait until the end of the summer, as Apple always has great "Back to School" savings (usually, you get a free iPod with your computer or the price of the iPod off the computer if you don't want an iPod....that on top of the Edu pricing makes it great).

I'm considering switching my PB up for a Macbook Pro, but I'm worried about running Photoshop on it at the moment due to it being run only as an emulation on the new machines.

current NYU student here, this is a super Mac friendly school. Two of my teachers even use Macs for presentations. Soooo many students here have macs including my roommate. I know Macs only have a hold on about 5% of the total computer-using population but here I would say they have about 40% of the NYU population. Also most of the computer labs hav macs and many of the free computers on campus are ONLY macs. get a mac and be happy here at NYU

futurenyustudent...its going to be a pain in the ass, and you're going to have to do most of your project in the stern computer lab instead of at your dorm since the programs will be uncompatible (unless you run all that emulation software)

Windows-based computers are, in my experience, generally of lesser quality than comparably priced macs.

E.G.: Acer vs. Apple. Apple CRUSHES Acer by a long shot. I'm using an acer right now and the fan won't stop running. It's SOOOO loud, and it's getting annoying. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to fix this problem on this laptop that has the intelligence of a calculator.
