NYU Abu Dhabi

hey, stinkfist, what was your sat scores and your gpa…?

Hey guys! I went to the October Candidate Weekend for NYU Abu Dhabi. It was awesome and all you guys may have thought about (the conservative culture and all), its not true! Abu Dhabi and NYU was amazing. I’m going to apply for regular decision there. (I went to the Candidate Weekend based on my counsellor’s recommendation, so I haven’t apply).

Futureholds, Saudi is way extreme. I have to say Abu Dhabi’s nothing like it, of course there are customs and stuff, but in no way are they comparable to Saudi’s customs. :|

They’re prettyy laid back in Abu Dhabi. Dubai (only 1.5 hours from AD) wouldn’t be popular with the westerners if the customs were strict here.

Having said that, you’d probably get bored of Abu Dhabi eventually and are better off in the states.

that was really funny!!

I think this school looks like a great opportunity and adventure. I am excited to send in my application and hopefully attend a candidate weekend.

I have also applied for NYUAD and am an egyptian…there are actually like 20 others from egypt who applied so i hope i would be considered for a candidate weekend
this is my record if any one is concerned…btw i am an IGCSE student

I believe that NYU Abu Dhabi is a great idea! I’m going on the January candidate weekend :)

congratz Rose i am going on the february CW hope to meet each other next fall :D

I have heard NYUAD is extremely selective with admission rate lower than 10%. Plus, i think the good part is everything is covered. You don’t have to pay any money to study.

^ theres two sides. some say what you just said, and others say applicants will shy away because the abudhabi campus isnt established, etc.etc. to each their own, i guess.
but dashdash, i’ll see you at the february candidate weekend! =]

i’ll be meetin’ y’all on Feb 18, AD all the way, yo!

heyhey
can everyone who got invited for the candidates weekend post their scores (sat, etc)?
thanks

Isn’t NYUAD like Harvard on steroids with a 1% admission rate? That’s ridiculous.

location? I think Abu Dhabi is the worst location it can be.

@Jamieco: Have you ever been there? It’s obvious that you don’t know what you are talking about. You’re talking about the richest city in the world, and one of the most impressive and rapidly growing. I think it’s rather a perfect location, right in the middle of the globe, really strategic for a better understanding of our world.

@doberhound1: Yes it is as selective as that, and it is not ridiculous, it is ambitious, and true ambition always leads to success.

Like many NYU students, I hate Abu Dhabi - that program is costing us $250 million a year! It has awesome financial aid - what about all those students back in the USA who see their tuition raised every year and more student loans? All Sexton cares about these days is his Mideastern money-sucking monster.

A Washington DC campus sounds is ridiculous! NYU is like a giant boil that gets bigger and bigger until it will eventually pop and spread it’s infected ooze all over the East Village. We’ll continue to be #1 for worst financial aid, classes will get larger, resources will be stretched, quality of education will go down and tuition will skyrocket. Most of you are HS kids who only know NYU through brochures, but believe me, there is a lot of resentment over AD here.

Last I checked, the NY in NYU stood for New York, and that’s what they should focus on. Smaller classes, more financial aid, better facilities, more scholarships, for the REAL NYU in Washington Sq.

@AdamJones: As a matter of fact, I have been there. In fact, up until now i lived in more than 8 countries and visited 50+ countries. Abu Dhabi is definitely not in the middle of the globe. Simply because it’s rapidly growing doesn’t make it a nice place for college students. Simply because it is richest doesn’t make it an ideal place. (by the way, if you are talking about nominal city income, shouldn’t this be Doha, Qatar?) Living there, you are cut off from valuable internship opportunities, historical places and interactions with other intellectuals.

Abu Dhabi is certainly a nice place to visit during vacations. And for those who never lived abroad or never visited the Middle East, yes it can also be an attractive place. And perhaps it may be a perfect place to some people. But for me, I would rather study in the States, or Europe, or even Asia…but somehow I just question myself what would the benefits be when you reside in Abu Dhabi for your college years.

Here’s an interesting article for those who are interested (mind you, this was written almost 2 years ago): [Has NYU President John Sexton Sold Out With an Abu Dhabi Expansion? – New York Magazine](Has NYU President John Sexton Sold Out With an Abu Dhabi Expansion? -- New York Magazine - Nymag)

Like others have said before me, I (really really REALLY) hate this new program, and I think you’ll find that this attitude is the norm for current NYU students. I used to be very supportive of John Sexton’s ambition to further the NYU name, but it’s clear that this is a stretch, even for me. Abu Dhabi wasn’t chosen for it’s cultural importance: it was chosen because they gave us the most money. We basically sold out to the highest bidder, and you know what that makes us. I know my comments will upset many who are chosen to be in the program, and I’m sure you are all high qualified, well deserving applicants. But-- even if you can manage to set aside the human rights aspect of this whole debacle-- it bothers me that you can get an NYU degree without ever setting foot on the Washington Square campus, and it bothers me that you get such grand financial aid when our annual tuition increases over here at “real” NYU are basically paying for your program.

I love NYU, but NYUAD is the reason why I will never, in a million years, give any money to the school as an alumni. I’d be horrified if I was a donating alumni and I found out that my money had gone to support this.

@Alix2012: First of all, NYU is NOT spending a single penny on its AD campus, it is fully sponsored by the AD government, as well as a few programs in the NY campus. So, please, try to be well informed in order to have reasonable and justifiable opinions. And be assured that your college tuition might be increasing for many reasons, but certainly not because of the AD campus.
@Jamieco: AD might not be the perfect place for everyone, this depends on one’s interests, but living there doesn’t mean at all “being cut off from valuable internship opportunities, historical places and interactions with other intellectuals”, this is an utterly false assumption, for intellect, history and internships aren’t a US exclusivity; this is far from being true. The world is much much more than the USA, and has much more to offer than the US culture; this is a fact one should accept, and benefit from to widen one’s intellectual horizons; and I believe this is the NYU AD vision: thinking beyond boundaries.
