NYU Abu Dhabi

oww!..how come tht didnt strike me!..tht they could be nominated students! :stuck_out_tongue:
I was getting worried, unnecessarily! :P

thanks, anyways! :)

@silkysilky23 – That’s okay, it happens. :)

ummm, they still did not check my TOEFL in Albert…

I did not get the invatation, BUT I did not get the rejection either… so… I don’t know what to think. Should I e-mail them or what?

hey!..hi!
they won’t be telling you that until the final date, i.e., the 15th of Dec…so, just wait till then! u never know wht could be in store for u! :)

well, it’s too late)))
I sent them an e-mail. Well, it was partially about TOEFL, so it wasn’t like ā€œTell me if I’m in or not!!!ā€ I hope they’re gonna respond

Just a question:
Is it possible to send the Jan SAT scores and yet apply for ED-2?

another question that I’ve had in my mind since long is this:
I’ve seen people who keep doing ā€œSAT-SAT-SATā€ā€¦but, I haven’t seen much of those who do tht with TOEFL!..
so, the question is: Is TOEFL not that strong a component in the overall application?(especially in terms of NYUAD)

the above question is based just on general observations…and nothing else…
even here, on this thread itself…I’ve seen no one discussing about TOEFL!
Also, this question was not just pertaining to NYUAD…but, all the univs in general…

@silkysilky23 === in my honest opinion, TOEFL and IELTS are needed just to ensure them that u can understand the course and study there well as well. so, u just have to get higher than 80 for example, that just prooves. but SAT can really show intellegence, and scores vary much, and SAT is a perfect way to show your abilities and thus, highlight yourself among others. Of course if the score is good.

@silkysilky23 - I’m sorry I can’t answer your 1st question because I didn’t take the SAT and I’m not applying ED-2. About TOEFL scores, NYUAD says you may submit them but they’re not required. SAT scores are most definitely more important.

yeh…no doubt, SAT much more important!..thts quite obvious…
but, in comparison with other components such as essays, recommendations, etc., where does TOEFL stand?..
(or does it even have a stand? :stuck_out_tongue: )

SAT is much more …

NewYorkUAD: OMG! (sorry I dont normally use it, but in this situation nothing else comes to my mind) do you really believe that SAT show ppl’s intelligence? I know a few graduates from harvard and all of them say that SAT test only shows how good are you at SAT test. I agree with them. Moreover I think the level of this test is not high, it is just formt:1 question per minute, sitting for 3,5h with 5 minutes breaks, which make it difficult. Anyway, that’s my opinion (and a few people from harvard).

@zuzenek === what you say that you have someone from harvard do not make your point of view stronger =) for example, from my school, one has graduated harvard, with some kind of scholarship that covers everything.
and as I understood you think not intellegent people can get good scores on SAT?
also, the time and pressure all make this test’s level high. really intellegent people answer easily, whereas for you and me, that’s difficult, and we do not get as good score as they do.

one more question:
Is there any possibility for an applicant who did not attend either of the CWs to be wait-listed? (thts not my case as of yet…since I am applying for ED-2…but, just asking…so, that if they do not invite me for the Feb CW, I’ll at least know that I still have some hopes or not)

There’s no doubt that intelligent pplz can do really well on SAT.
But lets say…U have taken the sat test for 10 times…but u have never achieved a 650+ for critical reading. then, there MUST be sumthin to do wiv ur IQ.
the sat test does not only test ur command of language but also ur logic way of thinking, nd the speed at which u can react to a certain…lets say…a stimulant to ur brain, and also how well u can memorize the details of a passage in a short period of time.

And I would like to say…that many top univs in China…they also employ a kind of test like SAT (applicants are expected to be tested of 10 subjects )to justify the academic abilities of the applicants for the early evaluation (but the applicants still have to take Chinese GAOKAO and get a decent score)

A good SAT score might not help u a lot . But a bad SAT score or no SAT at all can sometimes damage ur application. (especially to some top /hot colleges.) What is more, many many many of the chinese applicants…they have got SAT scores over 2200…or…even 2300.

yep!..and talking about the students at Harvard and their thoughtfulness…their ā€œintellectualā€ remarks could be true!..but, do they themselves follow wht they say? NOPE!..they appear for SAT-twice, thrice, or even more than tht in order to get in…and yep, they work really hard for the same!..
afterall, they know tht there isn’t any other way to escape(apply or get accepted to ā€œHarvardā€!)…so, whts the point in even discussing about tht?

But pass auf, the international students who got admitted to HYP are definitely intelligent.

Though even G.W.Bush can be admitted to yale…that’s a another thing.
What can help u to get into ur dream school (I mean IVY league) is either ur strong family background or ur strong academic ability (and it is no denial that students with great academic abilities are at least smart ones.)

HYPS might not admit a student with IQ over 150, but they will definitely not admit a student with IQ lower than 90 (expect the case of G.W.Bush)

And another point, intelligent people can not always do well on all tests. So they have to keep on practicing … and the process in which one strives to get a better score for SAT test is really torturing (at least for those whose mother tongues are not english). It is also a test of ur mental capacity. (believe it or not)

I’m in favor of SAT test! And through working hard on SAT, I have not only got a decent score for CR, but also become better at logic way of thinking!

I am not saying that they are ā€œbadā€, every test has some weaknesses. But I still do not agree that if you have high/low SAT/IQ score you are intelligent/stupid.
Ok, it measures logic way of thinking, but why if someone needs more time (than app 1 minute) to think he/she is at worst position? is his/her logic way of thinking worse because of that?
OK, it measures how good you are at memorizing the details from the passages, but is memorizing equal to intelligence?
I do not see an alternative for SAT tests (so let’s say I am in favor of them), but I wouldnt say that they measure intelligence.

P.s. I see you are really offended because I have mentioned ā€œharvardā€. there are ppl who score 2400 and 1800(or lower), how they work together if their level of intelligence/logic way of thinking differ so much?

Dont kill me.
PAX:)

Well actually, if you know, TOEFL is something that CAN be more easily cheated on/plagiarized compared to SAT, its because TOEFL centers actually don’t concentrate much on the measures compared to SAT, since they say, you can actually pay a kind of bribe to TOEFL centers for allowing you to cheat and they can help in increasing scores, plus on a more important note, TOEFL is just a test to understand your basic English and grammar skill, SAT on the other tests your critical thinking ability and logic rather than just mere English skill. To summarize, its really very easy in a general opinion to ace the TOEFL rather than SAT.
@silkysilky23 – Um no, wait-listing is basically a kind of admissions decision like reject/accept. So you must have had attended a CW prior to decision date, even if they have to wait-list you.
