NYU Accepts More Students for 2007 Freshman Class

While many colleges and universities are accepting fewer students, NYU is accepting more. NYU also received less applications this year than last, unlike other schools that received more.

haha.

no wonder I got in.

NYU says they think the reason the number of apps went down is the new requirement of SAT II's.

Along with the general buzz that college applicants are becoming ever more qualified, that also might suggest the overall "quality" of NYU applicants this year was higher than in previous years, which could explain the increase in real numbers of accepted applicants (up 1,165).

Hah, stressed0ut, I was just thinking the same thing..

During the current year's admission process, when I was talking to my daughter's classmates, I found a large number of them not very keen to apply. The top 5 reasons as I could make out:

1.High Cost/inadequate finacial aid.
2.Some of the big name public universities are rapidly improving in providing students, the feel of a personalized environment.
3.The undergraduate ranking of Stern, in the Business Week, made many to drop NYU from the list.
4. Perceived lack of investment in infrastructure/facilities.
5. "Not a friendly student body".

It is a very small sample, and may be very biased!

Yeah, declining interest. Only 34,109 students applied. Only the fourth year in a row that it's been named "#1 Dream School" by the Princeton Review. Nobody wants to come to NYU.

Every single bit of contact my D and I have had with NYU has been great. Some of the personal interest and attention might be because she's going into a relatively small program -- violin performance at Steinhardt, but the Music and Pertforming Arts Professions department has over a thousand students. It feels much more intimate.

I think NYU is very aware of the downside to being a large urban university and the potential for an impersonal or even alienating experience for its undergraduates. And they address these potential problems with well thought out initiatives (freshman housing / explorations floors, receptions for admitted students, 2-day summer orientation, one week orientation prior to classes).

We'll see how it unfolds, but I've been very impressed by NYU's personal attention and respect for students' individuality.

I agree, every time I've called admissions and Financial aid, they have been great to deal with. Maybe once they actually have all my money, they won't be as nice :-)

Yale University had a 9% drop in applications this year, compared to 3% for NYU.

As long as NYU and Yale are attracting the best academic students, the fall in applications should not be too much of a concern.
