My friend got hers in the mail last night, but last year, people I know that got accepted did not receive theirs until late March/early April. Was her letter mailed by mistake, or is NYU mailing them out early this year?

Some (increasing numbers, actually) schools send out early acceptance letters to students they consider among their top applicants. It isn't officially on most of their admissions schedules, but it's a great winter pick-me-up for those who get such letters.

NYU sent out notification for admissions into their General Studies Program early. They have not, though, sent out regular admission letters for their other schools.
