NYU alum discussing school/admissions

Hello everyone,

I graduated NYU (College of Arts & Sciences-class of 2000). I majored in philosophy and minored in history. I currently work in investment banking on Wall St. I had an invaluable experience at NYU, would be glad to answer questions and have discussions with those interested in my alma mater.

I also worked in the admissions office my sophomore and junior years in college, so I do have some perspective on how some the things talked about here work.

So, shoot away with your questions.

Best regards,
-J.

Hey Jwblue,
I'm applying to Stern Early Decision with an SAT of 1430 and a class rank of 12/390. I've taken a hard schedule with an emphasis on math. Is someone like me considered just an average applicant? How much would my EC's, essays, and recs matter?
Thanks

Hi HManx,

Stern is a great school, I had many friends who went there and are quite successful now.

Your rank and SATs are indeed impressive, but thats not a guaranteed admission to NYU since there are many applicants with stellar grades and SAT scores. EC's and recs are certainly important (what types of ECs do you have?), and do NOT underestimate the essay...trust me, they do get read and are taken seriously.

NYU has an enormous applicant pool, and unlike some other schools, they do not conduct personal interviews...so the essay is really a vehicle for the adm. cmte. to get a glimpse into you.

Jwblue,
Thanks for the insight.
-I play the violin and have made District orchestras
-I also play varsity tennis (all-star and MVP last year)
-some clubs like class reps and peer tutoring, calculus team, I am president of our school's French Honor Society.
-I have many volunteer hours at the library.
-I worked at a bank over the summer and have a great rec. from my boss there
-took a summer course in Economics
-Cornell Book Award
Thanks again

Hmanx,

You have some great activities and are a competitive candidate. Are you planning to play tennis at NYU (if you are contact the athletic dept. about this if you haven't already)....NYU is a DIII school so they don't give out athletic scholarships, but being able to play a sport at the varsity level for a college always helps in the admission process. Just don't neglect any one part of the application process...you've got a great chance.

Best of luck!

Dear jwblue,

How are the SATII scores of ED Stern applicants?
My scores are:
SATII: 680(Bio-Mol); 730 (MathIC); waiting for writing scores
Also, i might take another SATII in Nov. and rush the scores. Usually when nov. are rushed for ED, is the admission committee able to see them?

Thanks

NYer,

I'm not sure about the exact score averages, but your scores seem decent enough to put you in the running.

I believe if you rush the scores from Nov., NYU may be able to see them, BUT don't quote me on this and check with the school.

If you are thinking about taking another SAT II, try the Math IIC, as quantitative skills are very important for Stern....also its easier to get a high score on this test if you know the material since a smaller number of students take it.

Good luck.

jwblue,

How many people usually read each essay? Do essays only get read by one person? Also, do you know approximately how long each essay is read? Are they read like AP essays (2 minutes/essay) or is more time spent on them?

Thanks in advance.

Grxkn,

Several people (usu. 3-5) read the essay as the decision is by cmte. and not that of one person. I can tell more that 2 minutes is spent reading the essay, the NYU applicant pool while enormous is nowhere near the number of people nationwide taking AP exams, and the whole process lasts months, longer than how long they take to grade your AP exams. How much time is spent in exact number of minutes is hard to say...since its very subjective and depends on many factors such as the admission offiicer's mood, the quality of the writing, the applicant's competitivness (ie is it someone NYU is seriously considering to accept), etc.

Jwblue,

Thanks a bunch for that information.

No prob Grxkn.

Good luck!

Nyer03, a correction on the November SAT issue. The last testing date that NYU will guarantee to look at is October so there's no point in taking November tests if you're applying Early Decision. Also, NYU requests that you NEVER rush scores to them. You can confirm this information or ask the Admissions office questions on their bulletin board.

Thanks a lot jwblue

Hmmm,

I guess I stand corrected...I figured they would take the scores if rushed..but I could be wrong.

As far the importance of deadlines, lateness will hurt, but a day or two won't sink in my opinion. Regardless, you should check with the school.

Jwblue,
I'm doing my personal statements right now. Does it matter if I make them a little longer that the space provided? Also should the personal statements be straightforward or more creative?
Thanks

im really not liking what did u do last sunday question lol sundays my resting day

what are you guys writing about for your essay?

no idea, gotta do it 2morrow tho

Hi there, could you talk about how you got into investment banking?

I want to go to NYU, and I was very interested in pursuing investment banking as a career, but I was unsure about the educational requirements it requires. Like, do I really need to go to Stern for undergrad in order to get an i-banking job? or would gallatin or even CAS be able to give me the education required for it?

Any information regarding this would be extremely helpful, thanks.

HManx,

I think its okay if the personal statement is a little longer than the space provided..though your use of extra space should be reasonable (ie don't attach an extra 10 pages..but I'm sure you know this).

As to your other question, I'd make it creative, but if you mean answer question by straightforward, it should be that as well. I guess you have to balance answering the question and making the essay creative enough for you to stick out amongst the crowd of apps.
