Why would you even risk it? Trust me, kids get their offers rescinded every year. It's a stupid thing to take a chance now and slack off. You'll make someone on the waiting list very happy if you do.

nyu doesn't require mid-year school reports. so, how do we send them our grades?

They'll require a final transcript from your school in June. That's why it's stupid to slack off and let your grades slip. By then, if you're rescinded, you'll have nowhere to go.

How are they going to know your grades are dropping since we got in? For example in senior year alot of peple take alot more AP classes than they have in years past, and since they dont ask for mid year report they dont know if your grades dropped from mid year to end of year year. Some people could for example always get A in math and then get like a C in AP calc or something.

The point is that you need the same kind of marks you had prior to senior year. If they accepted you based on the transcript your school sent up to and including junior year grades, then that's the type of grades they'll expect to see at the end of senior year. Most accepted students will have taken APs prior to senior year in addition to those taken in senior year, so taking APs is no excuse for lower grades. You guys are making a mistake if you chance it.

but what if I didn't take APs before?

hey jwblue,

Should I apply to CAS or Steinhardt? I want to go for music and African studies but I don't know which school I have a better shot at getting into. If I audition at Steinhardt with my stats, will I have an equal chance of getting in a s I do to Steinhardt? Will they look favorably on my talent and will that make Steinhardt a better shot than CAS?

SAT (I will also have to take the new one, Im applying this fall) V:740 M:660
(1400)
GPA so far: 3.5 (unweighted, very competitive HS)
2 APS (music theory, US)
honors classes
6 credits at SU
4 at NYU
MANY club officer positons
YEARS of musical study and TONS of extras (both muscial or related to africa and not)

Breathfire,

I think you'd have to have to screw up MAJOR LEAGUE for them to revoke your admission.

JWM,

African studies is a CAS dept. from what I know. Music in CAS will be all theoretical, whereas in Steinhardt it will probably be more practical (ie you'll train to be a musician). It seems you'd probably be more suited to CAS (you're taking music theory), though tell me if I'm wrong about this.

In general CAS is harder to get into Steinhardt, and I don't know how important auditions are in Steinhardt (they are very important in Tisch). A good audition can only bolster your app; you're a pretty competitive applicant, and I think you have a decent shot at either school.

jwblue --

How hard is it to get into Tisch for dramatic writing? Is it really competitive?

Jwblue, I first off would like to appreciate you taking time to answer these questions.

How good is NYU's English department and how challenging is it to get a 3.7+ GPA there?

Jwblue,

I'm an asian Floridian who has applied to Stern. Though I feel relieved at sending the application off, I still have a major concern. Looking at many posts, I've noticed a lot of students have great SAT scores (at least those applying to Stern). I, on the other hand, do not. My verbal is 610 and my math score is a 710. My in the SAT IIs I scored a 720 in Math IIC, 640 in history, and a 600 in Writing. HOWEVER, I feel that almost everything else in my application is excellent. I've been involved in numerous clubs/varsity sports, holding presidency in 4 of them (NHS, French Honor Society, Speech and Debate Club, and French Club), and initiated a club at my school (French Honor Society), and another in my community. Unweighted, I have a 3.97 G.P.A. (I've only gotten 2 Bs, both for AP Literature), and weighted I have a 4.5 (maybe 4.6) G.P.A. Weighted, I'm ranked 2nd of a class of ~380 students, and I will have taken 11 AP classes total (9 if they don't see this semester...will they?) out of the 16 my school offers. I'll also be, biologically, the first in my familly to attend a 4-year university (how much do you think that will help, supposing it helps at all).

What I've concluded is that it'll all boil down to my essays, which I think are pretty good (of course look who's commenting). What do you think? How much does the admissions office weigh on SAT scores? From your experience on the admissions committee, has an applicant been turned down because of his/her low SAT scores, despite outstanding credentials? What does the committee immediately think when seeing low SAT scores from an applicant applying to as difficult of a school as Stern? I really think the SATs are overrated. I'm a little disappointed because I know I'm better than some lowsy scores (I took AP Language my Junior year and got an A, also passing the exam!) :-/

Sorry for the long speel and I REALLY appreciate your opinion. Please be truthful about my chances. Thanks!

JWblue:

screw up major league? what about probation? when do they put u on probation? I am scared as hell!

hey jwblue,

What do you think my chances at CAS are? I applied as a Bio major..

SAT V:650 M:710 (1360)
SATII Writing: 670, 2c: 700, chinese: 800
GPA so far: 3.8 (unweighted, very competitive HS)
2 APS (Chem, English Lang)
Cal BC, ChemIII, Bio AP
club officer positons
piano 12 yrs
worked as a waitress
decent recs and decent essays

im concerned cuz i think my SAT scores are a bit low..

Medit,

I would imagine the NYU English department is pretty good (not sure how individual depts. are ranked, but most depts. are fairly well regarded).

As far as getting a 3.7, CAS in general has a good amount of grade inflation (which is a great thing, gotta love gentlemen's B+s/A-s), so a 3.7 would probably not be impossible to attain in my opinion.

Pink,

I'm not sure about the acceptance rate of that particular program, though most Tisch programs are pretty competitive....your audition/porfolio will be of the utmost importance.

Sunscroch,

SATs are very very important, right up there with grades. Now I don't make admissions decisions, but I'm certain plenty of people have been turned down due to low SAT scores. This is the just the logical conclusion since after all NYU gets 34k+ apps a year, they can afford to be picky.

Despite your SATs, the rest of your app looks strong, and so you're in the running in my opinion. You've got a decent chance given your record. Keep in mind the SAT stats are averages, so people have have both lower and higher scores at NYU.

Good luck.

Ames,

Your SATs are not terrible, but not spectacular for NYU either. Your SAT IIs, GPA, and the rest of your app looks very good though.

You've got a decent chance, being from TX will probably be a plus too (adds to geographic diversity).

Good luck.

Breathfire,

To my knowledge, probation is something that happens ONLY if screw up at NYU. Once you start college, bad high school grades mean absolutely nothing if you actually manage to make it into NYU with them.

Again, for them to revoke your admission, I think you'd have screw up major league. IE one C isn't going to lead to revocation in my opinion, I think every top college knows of a thing called senior-itis. If you start actually flunking courses, thats probably a different story.

Thanks jwblue for your response.
