jwblue~
thanx a lot!
I mean, I read what nyu said on their bulletin board in response to my question: "failure to complete the 'successful completion' guidelines (meaning doing at the same level as when they accepted you), puts you under the threat of PROBATION...etc" so...they can put me on probation all the way from the start? like if I really mess up...which I won't, they will reject me...but if I mess up a little they could put me on probation? That's how I understood it. But you're saying that probation is only once you screw up in NYU? hmmm..I'm confused!

Hey everyone I was accepted ED to GSP program. I get my third marking period grades on Monday and I'm sure they have slipped slightly. Last term I had a 92 this marking period I'm expecting around an 87 or so, do you think this should be something to worry about?

Thanks Jwblue.

No prob. Sunscorch.

Settleboy,

In my opinion, you don't have anything to worry about. While that is indeed a slip in grades, its not anything significant.

Breathfire,

I personally have not heard of NYU putting someone on probation from the start of their college career...it simply doesn't make sense to me, why would NYU admit someone who they know screwed up very badly??...If you screw up that bad, NYU would just revoke your admission which makes a lot more sense the way I see it. If your grades still slip just a little bit, as I suspect happens with many people once they get admitted, you're fine, and nothing is really done.

I think probation is only if you screw up once at NYU.

thanks so much!!!!!

No prob. Breathfire, I think you should be okay.

sorry to bother you again with the same thing...but are you sure that there is no way to be put on probation right from the start...I read some posts about that...not NYU, but other schools. And why would NYU bulletin say so if it isn't true? I agree w/you, it doesn't make sense...but is it true? :(

I wouldn't worry much if I were you. Well okay, Im not a 100% sure, but it seems very logical to me...why would a school as selective as NYU allow someone who screwed up that badly in high school to even walk through their doors? Also, from personal experience, I never knew anybody that was on probation before they even started class at NYU....I've never even heard of something like this.

FYI, the NYU schools' deans deal with academic probations..not the admissions office, so this is not an area where the admissions bulletin board even knows everything, so I would suspect they are not infallible on every post, especially when it comes to answering questions outside their scope.

oh thanx...it's kind of an awful threat you know.
b/c I am not failing or anything, but I got a really hard program in school, so one of my grades will be like a 70, another another 2/3 85s...that's not a big deal right?

im dropping from A/A+'s to B+/A-'s in like 5 classes, thats fine right

I think you guys should be fine...both of you. Breathfire, you still have a lot of time left before you finish high school, the best thing for you is to not do so bad.

Hey jwblue. First off, I want to thank you for the enormously helpful service youre providing to people here. Secondly, I would like to know what my chances are for getting in to NYU CAS ED.

Here are a few statistics:

Unweighted GPA: 3.5 (90) (Our school does not do Class Rank)

Course Load: Rigorous (All Honors or APs when possible)

SAT: 1550 on OLD SAT

Testing at: 2330-2370 on NEW SAT

SAT II: Writing, Biology, Chemistry, Math IC, Math IIC (700 +, I got a 650 on one)

AP Courses: AP World, AP American, AP Calc BC, AP English, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP European (All 4s and 5s)

ECs: Model United Nations (President) (4 years), Speech and Debate (President) (4 years) (Local and State Champion), Masterminds Trivia Team (3 years) (Treasurer), Shakespeare (4 years not including six years of active training) (Student Director Junior Year) (Lead Role Senior Year), Science Research (Allows students to pursue independent original research outside of class) Empire State Youth Orchestra

Miscellaneous: I work at a local cat shelter, and also perform original research exploring animal behaviorology.

Lexis,

Thank you for your kind words.

I think you have a really good chance. I know pretty much nothing about the new SAT, but I'm assuming your new score is roughly equivalent to your old score. I think you have some great EC's as well; just be sure to keep your gpa strong, and you should be fine.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey Jwblue, I was wondering if you could give me an idea of what my chances are of getting into the NYU Wagner School for a masters program in Urban Planning. I have allready applied for the fall and waiting for a decision. Just wanted some advice. Here are my specs:

Graduating from U.T. Austin (May 2005)
Majored in :Political Science
Minors:Business Administration, Economics and Management
Overall Undergrad GPA 3.03
On the National Deans List
Member of Phi Theta Kappa (International Scholastic Order)
The application required 2 letters of recommendation, but I sent in 6.
I'm not applying for fellowship or TA ship and will fund the program myself.

I also worked as an assistant manager in two different businesses.

Thanks a ton blue

Zman,

I know a lot more about undergrad admissions than grad school admissions. I would also imagine your GRE score will play a big part in your chances at Wagner. You seem like a pretty competitive candidate.

Just a couple observations:

"Overall Undergrad GPA 3.03"

*Whoa..you're on dean's list with that GPA (at NYU undergrad, with its grade inflation you need like 3.6 for dean's list..and thats still not as bad as some other schools). I think you'd want to let the admissions cmte. know of the grade deflation at your school.

"The application required 2 letters of recommendation, but I sent in 6."

*An extra recc. never hurts, but 6 might be overdoing it.

Good luck with your app. and keep us posted.

First of all thanks for all the information and I think I speak for everyone. A few quick questions. Firstly, the GRE was not required (but recommended)for this program so I dident take it out of fear of getting a bad score. Secondly, do you honestly think it would hurt me if I sent in a ton of rec letters ? The application specified that you can make up for low grades (my 3.03) by strengthening other parts of the application so I thought sending in more recs would do it. I applied to UCLA for the same program and got rejected just today :( :( Do you think I should expect the same from NYU ? They are both kinda in the same league dont you think ? thanks for all the info man you're a great help

Zman,

I just think that six reccs. when only 2 are required might be overdoing it. Unless all 6 reccs. are steller, there is a chance one those might be opening up a pandora's box by saying something about you thats less than perfect. Out of those 6, I would have sent like 3 of the best ones....remember..quality over quantity. I also think high test scores make up for lower grades a lot more than extra reccs. But again, I know more about undergrad admissions, so I could be wrong re: the extra recc. letters.

Have you applied to other schools?....neither NYU nor UCLA can be considered safeties in any sense, so it would be wise for you to have some other schools in mind. Also, if its not too late, you might want to consider the GREs...I hear they are given like every month. A good score on the GRE will tremendously boost your chances no matter what grad program you apply to.

hey Jwblue, how you been?
are A.Ps worth it?
I mean, I called nyu and they said that "maybe", or rather there are "some" classes it will put me out of otherwise it will just give me credit if I get a 4 or a 5. I don't want to pay all that money for A.Ps, even w/ the reduced fee which is $52 (first year that it's not free for those who can't pay for it), I got 3 of them, plus I paid my senior dues worth $120, and my mom said she can't pay for my A.Ps, and the money's due on the 18th.
then I thought about it...what are the chances of getting a 4 or a 5 on English, Euro and Psych..well, Psych is possibe, but Euro and English is like a 3, making my money a waste. Plus, it might end up being so that nyu will NOT put me out of class, just give me credit.
I'm not taking the tests, I simply can't afford them.:( but I mean, is it even worth it?
