I was reading the Washington Square News and I saw several articles about student drug dealers. Is it a big deal at NYU?

There was a huge drug bust last year or the before, a drug ring in the $10,000's

You can go there. It's a very safe school because Manhattan is almost always filled with people. NYU area starts to move around 11 PM to 2 AM. Yea, it's very safe. Just do not get yourself into troubles like shooting heroin or w/e. Just ignore the stupid ones, then you are fine for the four years at NYU.

Best of luck

reefer madness! (according to princetonreview, at least...)

It isn't that bad. If you seek it out, you will find it, if not you probably won't encounter it. Don't be surprised though if you smell the stench of weed pervading throughout your dorm halls though...

If you are really straight edge there are special housing floors called SAFE floors for people who aren't into drugs/alcohol.

Also watch out for the drug dealers on Washington Square Park West too. They offered me the other day "free samples," which I declined. hehe

I don't want to sound stupid, but I come from a small town and am not sure how the bar/club scene works in NYC. Will someone be my mentor and tell me how it works? You can be as condescending as you want - I just want the facts.

I know it's easy to get into the local bars. What do most people order? Will someone get suspicious if I order a fancy ****tail? Is there a common drink that everyone jsut gets without asking for?
How much does it cost? shot, pint, pitcher, mixed drink
Will the bartender tell me the price or do I guess?
Am I supposed to tip?

Is all of this the same in a club?
Should I tip the bouncer?

That's funny! It took out the **** in tail. I guess I can't say pea or *amaimey or *-and-bull

haha omg ineedcolumbia you have a lot to learn!! You order at a bar just like you would order at a restaurant. Most people will get beer and the beer that they have usually is displayed on the taps. You order what you like, i suggest you do some alcohol experimenting before you go to nyu. I usually order things like vodka and sprite. They do have menus. Don't tip bouncers and clubs work in a similar fashion.

ineedcolumbia, first time u go out drinking, make sure you get 80-100proof hard liquor, and take 15 shots as fast as possible... youll get a little buzzed itll be fun.

The "hobby" is what you make of it, if you seek it out, its easy to get, but its not like everyone, or even the majority do it. And yes, NYU is a big party school where people drink a lot. You'll learn the bar protocol pretty quick freshmen year if you get in and go to NYU. Also, never tip a boucner unless there is a line to get in at some real posh venue, and you want to skip that line (that will take some cashola...I'm talking more than a couple bucks, but it might be worth it sometimes when you don't want to wait in a line with freezing NY winter temps).

Good luck.

-NYU class of '00

Dude...the safest area is Washington Sq Park because there are like a kazillion security cameras hidden within the park...as well as a 24 hr police van that tries to be camoflagued but is so freaking obvious.

They have to protect the students or else parents will sue. The park is pretty safe. Don't take drugs from ppl who look like bums because sometimes they are undercover cops and will haul your ass. Just a tip.
